I don't if it's just contrarianism. Morrison might be connecting this to the libertarian spirit of the 60s in some half-digested half-witted way, as celebrities and neoliberals sometimes do. Semi-intelligence (a great mind for lyrics but total absence of empathy or truly critical thought) is a dangerous thing.

It might also just be anger at losing out on concert revenue.

John Lennon was flawed and fucked up, but at 35 or so he faced up to how he’d been to women years before. So IMO, he kind of atoned.
