Indeed, but I think he is just a cunt:

I sometimes wonder how a great songwriter can be so thick, but the above does suggest a lack of sharp tools in his mental shed.

But the likes of Mozart were the popular music of their day.

        So they count, surely?

Over to Snake to change the thread totle to say "popular music"?

Among aristocratic elites and in a few opera-mad urban centres (like Venice), but certainly not among the broad population.

Did we do Jackson Browne? Actually in 14 pages we must have and I missed it/was too lazy to check properly.

I think he got a mention, but like you, I'm not going to search back to check.

I mentioned Jackson Browne among other wife-beaters at the top of page six.

Van Morrison is clearly an utterly moronic selfish arsehole in the same league as Noel G and that Stone Roses twat, but he does have the redeeming feature that his name provided the basis for one of the best ever letters to Viz.

In his case, it seems like lazy contrarianism - with Brown and Gallagher, I'm suspecting a lack of knowledge at the fore. I mean, I'm all for people proffering different opinion if they've somewhere to go that's a little further advanced than unfounded keyboard-warrior-friendly conspiracy-theorising.

Nay worries - I knew I'd pitched him somewhere so felt it my duty, etc.

I don't if it's just contrarianism. Morrison might be connecting this to the libertarian spirit of the 60s in some half-digested half-witted way, as celebrities and neoliberals sometimes do. Semi-intelligence (a great mind for lyrics but total absence of empathy or truly critical thought) is a dangerous thing.

It might also just be anger at losing out on concert revenue.

In that connection, I see that Mike Love, who surely has already been nominated above, is continuing to tour his faux Beach Boys regardless of risk.

Yes, fair point - Morrison is very much a product of that era.

Lee Kerslake dying this weekend reminded me that Sharon Osbourne holds a special place in the twat list, despite not being a performer herself.

Her Dad holds an even higher one.

So can John Lennon be included in this list? From the man's own mouth:

"It is a diary form of writing. All that ‘I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved’ was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically – any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn’t express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women."

John Lennon was flawed and fucked up, but at 35 or so he faced up to how he’d been to women years before. Jealous Guy gives us real vulnerability, and he gave Yoko equal status and acknowledgment in his last years. This was before it was standard for men to show emotion and give women any recognition. So IMO, he kind of atoned.

I’m not one to say “at least he’s honest” to excuse all sorts of shitty behaviour; he was honest, and more importantly, he was sorry. So, whilst he still wasn’t a saint, he contributed something good.

Yep, many of his later songs addressed both his, and the wider issue.

I agree but would say 30 rather than 35 (he wrote Jealous Guy when aged 30). OTOH he still cheated on Yoko after that, such as on election night 1972.

When he was 27/28, really, but with different lyrics.

Clapton gets mentioned quite often on this forum for being a cunt, but I don't remember this ever being mentioned, or at least I've missed it if it has. This must put him towards the top of this chart.
