Bands you thought would be big ...

... but twas not to be.

    Lone Justice
    The Sandkings
    World of Twist
    The House of Love*

    * Who popped above the radar, admittedly, but I thought they would be huge

My band. When we first got a gig in London and a review on drownedinsound.com I thought we had it made. Ha!

I remember bigging up and predicting great things for a band called Parva on the old-old board. They were like an English working class Stooges, with a bit of Supergrass poppiness. They're now better known as a bunch of riot-prediciting shite dispensers.

I suppose this is based on how you classify MASSIVE, and many bands that sounded amazing to my inexperienced teenage ears now in retrospect sound complete and utter bollocks. But I really believed the following bands would make it big:

      The Hinnies
      Fruit
      Adorable
      Prolapse
      S*M*A*S*H
      The Frank and Walters

Jesus, hat a ramshackle bunch of shite that is, but there are at least 2 or 3 songs by each band I still love to this day.

A band I never thought in a million years would be massive were Cornershop. There are quite a few bands I saw in their nascient gigging stage and it was completely obvious they would be massive (PJ Harvey, Nirvana, Suede, Radiohead, Chemical Brothers. Daft Punk).

        Performance
        The Armoury Show
        At The Drive-In
        The Ecstasy of St Teresa
        Vince Clarke & Paul Quinn

These are all included because of 'relativity' - how big they actually became relative to how big you thought they should have been.

Obviously At The Drive-In received rave reviews and some notoriety - I thought they'd be vast, personally. Vince Clarke is huge for several other projects, but this one flopped in spite of its quality.

In my first year of college I really thought Sixteen Deluxe were going to be huge. They weren't. I didn't even like them that much either.

Heh. It wasn't even Sixteen Deluxe, it was Sincola.

            Family:

Good set list, tight musically, charismatic front man with unusual moves and striking voice.

Slow out of blocks after a badly produced first album, never really got back in the running afterwards.

I thought The Las were going to bust it big.

I also figured it was just a matter of time before The Connels leveraged their massive popularity on mid-atlantic college campuses to massive popularity on college campuses nationwide. Never happened.

My dad loves them, not that that counts for anything.

I believe they're pretty big in Germany.

Having a number one single isn't bad. Plenty of 'massive' bands never managed that.

Anyway, a few answers to the original question.

                          Engine Alley
                          Orlando

                            Big Sound Authority
                            Hipsway

I liked both very much, and really thought that they'd be bigger. They should've been.

I dunno. They were pretty much a straight ahead rock band with psychedelic curlicues. Losing key personnel just as their star was on the rise probably didn't help.

I always see Hipsway vinyl in charity shops, although now I've checked, they only had one Top 20 single. I guess their record company thought they would be pretty big as well.
