Artists identified by their song titles.

Of course, there are traditional nicknames - The Boss, ol' Blue Eyes and The King.

But I can only think of Madonna; still routinely identified as the Material Girl 35 years on.

Anyone else nicknamed by a song title of theirs?

Errm, Gary Glitter? 'The Leader' was of course a self-appointed title based on his I'm the Leader of the Gang (I am) number one from 1973.

Oh, was he? Okay. He didn't make much noise over her besides the song that's played at all the hockey games. Rock n Roll something....

I'm trying to decide whether The Purple One was so dubbed due to Purple Rain or just everything being purple with him.

      Thoughts?

        That probably qualifies, yes.

Elton John was - very briefly - referred to as 'Captain Fantastic' by British music hacks when that album was out and about. (His tendency to put out two albums a year back then probably killed it off early.)

Shabba Ranks (who cropped up on another thread yesterday) is, I gather, often referred to as 'Mr Loverman' in deference to his biggest UK hit.

(Yep, Rock and Roll Pt II was Glitter's only major US hit.)

Possibly before then - and certainly latterly.

He always always seemed to be referred to as Andy 'Wide-eyed and Legless' Fairweather Low.

Unless it was because he had a booze problem.

Surely he was better-recognised as the singer with Amen Corner?

He went bankrupt shortly after ordering a personalised football replica shirt.

I'm surprised really that Sir Tom was never nicknamed Delilah.

How can we forget Mark Morrison's attempts at getting into this category? Alas "Return of the Mack" failed to usurp his existing nickname of "That annoying prick".

I think he was more widely known as 'The Accused'.

I thought he was usually referred to as "the hardest-working man in showbusiness."
