In my early teens I barely watched contemporary movies, so I'll leave out that category.

      1997 (12 going on 13 in December)
Single: Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench
LP: Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape

      1998 (13 going on 14)
Single: Air - All I Need
      LP: Air - Moon Safari

      1999 (14 going 15)
Single: Blink-182 - All The Small Things
LP: Blink-182 - Enema Of The State

      2000 (15 going 16)
      Single: Foo Fighters - Breakout
LP: Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

      2001 (16 going 17)
      Single: Supermen Lovers - Starlight
      LP: Daft Punk - Discovery

      2002 (17 going 18)
Single: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop
LP: Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf

      2003 (18 going 19)
Single: Fountains Of Wayne - Stacy's Mom
LP: The Strokes - Room On Fire

      2004 (19 going on 20)
Single: Air - Cherry Blossom Girl
      LP: Faithless - No Roots

I am definitely of that age where you had to explain to the kids that Dave Grohl had been in a band before the Foo Fighters.

There's a real danger of false memory on this thread, where I conflate what I did buy with what I should have bought (and probably own now). Anyway, my favourites from memory.

Checking lists from each year makes it hard not to put something cooler in each category but I've stayed true to what I was into at the time. I regret getting into trip-hop a few years afterwards as the first Portishead and Tricky albums still get played occasionally.

Also, I find much of the music I dismissed as fashion without merit like say jungle or drum n bass is more important and stands up better than the pub/dad rock shit I thought was so meaningful as a teen. Oasis and all that Britpop I was such a snob about. Of course there were some great records but most of that genre had been done decades before and didn't really add anything to the genre, other than great memories, which I suppose is one of the points of this thread.

Yeah, it's hard not to project backwards (re-ject?) I stuck with stuff I knew I bought and played to death. Some years were particularly hard. 1962 was a bastard, at least half a dozen singles could easily fit.

I have a hunch that for most people, the years when they were 13-14 are like that. Old enough to like the grown-up music (here I mean more older brothers rather than moms & dads), young enough to still have fun with stuff aimed at teenagers. Plus the nostalgia of all kinds of awakenings.

I start a little earlier to fit in a thread-appropriate classic

1974 (turning 12) Teenage Rampage, Kimono my House
1975 Only You Can, Night at the Opera
1976 Arms of Mary, Hotel California
                              1977 Magic Fly, Rumours
                              1978 It's raining, Parallel Lines
1979 Up the Junction, Breakfast in America
1980 Food for Thought, Black Sea
                              1981 Ghost Town, Dare

I would've been 28 going on 29 in '98, but I would've chosen them also, along with Cafe Del Mar v.5, and Gran Turismo by The Cardigans.

Nowadays, I'd favor La Femme d'Argent over All I Need, but the video for the latter was all over MTV in 1998, and thoroughly fascinated me.

It looks like sometime around 14 that I shifted away from Radio 1 and chart music, having said that my LP choices weren't particularly mainstream pop. The Crossing was only the third LP I owned, so I played it to death.

                                      1983 (12 going on 13 in July)
Single – Mad World, Tears For Fears
LP – The Crossing, Big Country

                                      1984 (13 going on 14)

Single – Two Tribes, Frankie Goes To Hollywood
LP – Some Great Reward, Depeche Mode

                                      1985 (14 going on 15)

Single – Bring On The Dancing Horses, Echo & The Bunnymen
LP – The Head On The Door, The Cure

                                      1986 (15 going on 16)

Single – Happy Hour, The Housemartins
LP – The Queen Is Dead, The Smiths

                                      1987 (16 going on 17)

Single – Ask Johnny Dee, The Chesterfields
LP – George Best, The Wedding Present

                                      1988 (17 going on 18)

                                      Single – What For, James
                                      LP – Green, REM

                                      1989 (18 going on 19)

Single – Can’t Be Sure, The Sundays
LP – Bizarro, The Wedding Present

                                      1990 (19 going on 20)

                                            Indeed. Great tune, great band

PS Jah and I would have been in the same first year at big school (73/74). It was probably the dominance of unlistenable prog that made me stick to 'safer' pop

Indeed - when I was 12-13, that stuff was for my older sister's boyfriends as far as I was concerned. I used to read Music Scene magazine at that point, so I was au fait with a lot of the prog names, if not their music. Although I liked a lot of stuff I'd still listen to now (Bowie/Cockney Rebel/Mott The Hoople/T Rex, etc) I was strictly 'Top 30' in the early/mid-seventies: punk/new wave came along and changed all that.

To be honest, I was never that much of a fan of the 'revival' stuff, but the odd tune resonated. I liked Shotgun by The Darts. (They were massive in 1978, with three consecutive #2 hits - also outselling everyone else in terms of ticket sales. [So their publicity claims, at any rate.])

I think I got Origin on release day too. It was in between finishing A Levels and starting uni and was something of a soundtrack for that first term away. That would have been the second album I bought on release day after Be Here Now in 1997, which kind of had to be done as the release date was part of the cover artwork.
