So the debate on the Irredeemable Artists thread got me thinking. What if there was a way to measure the influence of a band / artist through some sort of popularity algorithm.
This might already exist, of course.
It would need an aggregation of reviews - live, album, single etc - probably weighted according to review source
Some kind of algorithm relating to
Sales
Chart time / frequency
Airplay
Downloads / Spotify
I'd love to see other things included as well
Tour venue sizes / ticket sizes
Mentions in other reviews (how often are a band cited as an influence / compared to others)
Inclusions in influence articles eg 100 greatest albums of all time etc.
Fan club members (if they have one)
Magazine cover appearances (weighted)
Number of covers of their songs that have charted
Number of songs including samples that have charted
Mentions in news outlets (maybe? Could be tricky as e.g. Gary Glitter got mentioned a lot a few years ago.)
Anything I've missed on this?
