Lyrics you suddenly realise are brilliant.

"They didn't want it but he built it anyway"
    - 'Alec Eiffel' by The Pixies

"The body bags and little rags of children torn in two"
    - 'Two Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden

Can't help but sing along to this

I got gas in the tank
I got money in the bank
I got news for you baby, you're looking at the man
I got skin in the game
    I got a household name
I got news for you baby, you're looking at the man

I know he is a Trump fan but before all of that, Kanye came up with this belter in the song New Slaves.
"You see there's leaders and there's followers but i'd rather be a dick than a swallower."

Staying with the sexual references, i am also fond of Denise Lasalle's lyrics from Lick It Before You Stick It.
"You are making her feel good but you can make her feel better. If you treat your lady like a stamp and letter."

Let's go for a triple helping of sexual lyrics. This time it's Prince with the song I Love U In Me.
"When she's making love it's like surgery, and she say ooooh, i love you in me."

"And I fell into the aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarms ... of Venus de Milo."

A bit of a cheat, as I've considered it brilliant for years.

'I turn on the news and my body froze These braying sheep on my TV screen"

Again, always was brilliant, but never seemed more apposite.

Always quite liked the line 'dance like John Travolta...now' in Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) by James.

Always thought much the same as the oeuvre of Difford and Tilbrook.

Ian Broudie’s Pure, still one of my favourite songs.

You're the kind of girl who wants to open up the bottle of pop too early in the journey
Our love went flat just like that

"You can set the controls for the heart or the knees" is a dark favourite of mine.

                          It went right by me
At the time it went over my head
I was looking out the window
I should have looked at your face instead

Hold Your Fire was released in September 1987. I was 11, going on 12, and right from the start Open Secrets was my favourite song (closely followed by Second Nature, but I digress).

I never really got the lyrics until I was much older, and finding out how relationships work (or, sometimes, don't.).

                          It's still a great song.

                            All Elvis Costello

"She said that she was working for the ABC News.
It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use."
                            Brilliant Mistake

                            " I said, 'I'm so happy, I could die'”
She said, Drop dead, then left with another guy."
The Angels Wanna wear my Red Shoes

"I don't know if you are loving some body.
I only know it isn't mine."
                            Alison

"My Favourite Things is playing again and again,
But it's by Julie Andrews, and not by John Coltrane"
                            This Is Hell

                            "Somewhere in the Quisling Clinic,
There's a shorthand typist taking seconds over minutes."

Could people perchance state the source of some of these brilliant lyrics?

They say that roosters do it

"You set the controls for the heart of the knees" is from "Under the Gun" by the Sisters of Mercy who could string individual lines of brilliance into entire songs of pretentious wankery.

                                          My favourite Terrorvision song:

And we've all got sick with our cooler than thou,
                                          Holier than sh*t attitudes,
Still the war goes on just drop the bomb,
                                          There's nothing left to lose.
There's a bullet in this gun
so you've got till the count of one
                                          before they shoot.

                                          Let's get a disease
there's nothing better to do, so we'll give it to you
and then do as we please,
We'll move to mars, buy big fast cars,
                                          Then spread with ease.
'cause this gun's pointing at you,
So you've only got till two
                                          before they shoot.

                                          Let's start a war
where lots of people get killed, we destroy the world
                                          there's nothing left no more,
Rid the earth of a race right off its face
                                          just say we're bored.
'cause if that gun's pointing at me,
Then you've only got till three
                                          before they shoot.

                                          Let's invent a drug, yeah!,
That's addictive quick, makes you sick
                                          with an instant hug,
We'll sell it to kids who'll flip their lids
                                          then total crook.
You don't get to the count of four,
                                          They don't do that anymore
                                          before they shoot.

I was driving home yesterday with the radio on and Sara Cox played Somewhere in My Heart by Aztec Camera. I turned up the volume and sang along and suddenly got hit by a wave of nostalgia that choked me up.

This bit always makes the hairs bristle on the back of my neck

                                                  The one thing that's understood
Is that you can't buy time
But you can sell your soul
And the closest thing to heaven is to rock and roll
