I think I saw Therapy in the early 90s in LA.

Joy Division is name dropped as a comparison but I hear the first New Order recorder more than JD.

Interesting story. It's surprising that so many churches have been used for DIY punk shows. I think this is the first synagogue I've heard about that was used for punk shows.

When was the term “post punk” first used? I’m sure it wasn’t around in the early 90s when I started buying the U.K. music press less n less.

edit: wiki has Morley claiming it but Jon Savage in Sounds being the first in print with it in 78. I genuinely had it down as an internet era definition.

I could imagine it being used in Manchester around the time Rough Trade was founded in early 78 as a way of saying that these bands were influenced by e.g. Bowie and the Velvets not just 60s garage punk and the Stooges. I doubt Morley or Savage thought of it first; it would have been a fairly obvious idea to those bands: we're not just copying those London cunts.

I might have posted this in the pop will not eat itself thread although I usually post hardcore stuff there. Anyway, a collection of older Chicago-based DIY punks who are making some Siouxsie/Killing Joke style stuff in this group:

Stumbled across this via a podcast the other day and to my great surprise it's an absolute belter: AWOL by The Three Johns.

Nugs has done a deal with Gang of Four. The company released a bunch of live options today. I personally wouldn't spend the money to stream or download these, but in case someone is a big fan, here you go. I previewed some tracks. The New York show that comes up first sounds poor but the others seem like soundboard recordings.

A friend tipped me off to Otoboke Beaver today. The latest single sounds like the Slits making garage punk, but the last album sounds very Slits-like minus the reggae and replaced by experimental chaos.

Probably a bit more indie rock than post-punk, but why not:

I was thinking about starting a new thread about bands who seem to stop but there is seemingly no discussion about the band stopping. Then I figured that I'm not very interested in that situation for most bands. Haha. I am intrigued by Savages, which is a band that seem to fit the post-punk thread, so I will ask here. They took their time between the first and second albums but then have seemingly stopped making music without any kind of announcement unless I missed an announcement. And as far as I can tell none of the members are doing anything that has captured the attention of an audience that would come close to Savages. Does anyone know what happened?

They've all released solo work or side-projects, including one that's both the drummer and bassist, I would guess that they just feel like they've played out the string as to what they're interested in doing as that quartet, and are more interested in doing other things. There's always the chance that there are nasty interpersonal politics involved; I usually assume that given no smoke, it's just likely that they felt it was time.

Jehnny Beth has been the most prominent - her 2020 solo album To Love is to Live was very good.

To the best of my knowledge, she and professional/personal partner Johnny Hostile are working on new material.

I know some bands announce or don't announce a break which might lack any general timeline. Members of Fugazi still claim the band is not broken up. Fugazi is a top 10 band for me but the band had run its course. I wasn't too concerned that they stopped making music together. Savages seemed to be on the verge of something. Of course, I get that being in a band requires a lot of emotional energy. People get sick of each other.
