The beat won't go on for The Drummer Man

Wrecking Crew legend Hal Blaine has died at 90.

He drummed on so many classic hits, it's unbelievable. His greatest moments were his contributions to the hits in Simon & Garfunkel's canon -- from Mrs Robinson to Hazy Shade Of Winter to The Boxer to Bridge Over Troubled Water -- and his contribution to Pet Sounds and Beach Boys hits like Good Vibrations. And all the Spector recordings, including Be My Baby. And and abd...

He created that weird bang sound on The Boxer, and the equally strange percussive sounds on Bridge Over Troubled Waters, made by slamming snow chains on to a cement floor. On Dean's Martin's Houston, Blaine played the glass ashtray...

I made two mixes of songs on which Blaine played a few years ago. They're still up.

When folk talk about Bonham or twatboy Moon being Mr Drummer Man, nah. Hal Blaine was up there with yer Stubblefields, Purdies, Gadds, Muscle shoals rhythm sections, Funk Brothers. An amazing body of work.
