That's too bad. He used to do an acoustic set before plugging in, but is probably getting more self indulgent in his old age. I think in some ways he tends to see himself as a bit of a guitar hero, he and Randy Bachman grew up in Winnipeg together grooving to the Shadows and Ventures and continue to jam together when time permits. In spite of that Live at Massey Hall 1971 is one of the better singer/songwriter concert albums of that era.

Bill Haley: from established Western Swing singer to co-founder of Rock & Roll (any number of Rock & Roll pioneers would qualify; but Haley changed styles, not just evolve)

Charlie Rich: from blue-eyed soul singer to purist country icon

Morrissey: From spokesman for alienated youth to spokesman for racist wankers.

I think we've got our winner here.

            Okay, I'll do it.

From late-sixties Anglo-Greek psychedelic pop to pioneering early-nineties grunge figureheads...

            (Shurely shome mishtake? Ed.)

However, that isn't really the same thing, is it, as she went changed bands and went solo.
Ah, well, if we are going to allow that sort of thing, Norman Cook was in the Housemartins, then went via Freak Power and Beats International until he settled on being Fatboy Slim.

Pink Floyd? On the face of it, you wouldn't think The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and The Final Cut were made by the same band.

Ruby isn't a solo act, though - it's Rankine with multi-instrumentalist Mark Walk (formerly of Pigface, latterly of Skinny Puppy).

I did think about the Grizzelders, but if we're to include an artist's pre-recognition bands, then it's a longer schlep.

(Janik might have a point, although I think that Cook fits the bill here pretty comfortably.)

Talking of individuals rather than bands, maybe Mick Jones transition from The Clash to Big Audio Dynamite just about fits here.
Though arguably not a quantum leap from "Combat Rock" to B.A.D.

Ministry - from Sire records attempt to cash in on the success of UK synth pop like Depeche Mode to heroin using industrial metal hybrid.
Ulver - from Norwegian black metal to epic pop which is more Pet Shop Boys than Mayhem
The Ex - from CRASS like anarcho-punk to free jazz and traditional Ethiopian music

And of course Sir Cliff Richard, from rock 'n' roll originator to proto-black metal (Devil Woman), to inventing house music (Wired for sound) to being nearly as big-as-Jesus (Millenium Prayer). Is there no form of music that this man has not blessed?

That reminded me of Damon Alban, Blur to Gorrilaz.

Which of the Gallagher brothers went from Oasis to making pop that sounded like Ricky Martin crossed with Plastique Bertrand?

Noel. But it was still lightyears ahead of what his kid brother was doing. (Which, of course, is DBFP.)

To be honest, none of it has been much of a stretch from later Oasis material.

                                Pantera.

Several albums of (admittedly getting heavier) glam rock, then a vocalist change and another gear up in hardness, then out goes the spandex and we get Cowboys from Hell.

Which is a great album, irrespective of the controberco that surrounds the band.

Steve Winwood had something of a chameleon-like career.

Started with R&B (Spencer Davis Group) before graduating to Traffic, who were originally psychedelic and later a bit prog. Can't speak about Blind Faith, but by the 80s he was rolling up his jacket sleeves and making radio-friendly pop.

Kenny Rogers - from psychedelic, folk-tinged rock 'n' roll to seasoned housewives'-favourite country storytelling.

                                        Bernard Sumner/Peter Hook/Steve Morris - from ice-sculpted post-punk nihilism to Arthur Baker-driven BPMs.

                                        Pitchshifter - from uncompromising Peel-favoured doom-metallers to heavily-programmed industrial drum & bass.
