Don't know how many guitarists are on here but thought it might be worth asking. I've played guitar ineffectually for years on a cheap and battered Mexican Telecaster, and while I have long periods not bothering to practise at all, I'm enjoying it a lot at the moment as a stressbuster. I'm thinking of buying a new guitar - something different and semi acoustic or hollowbodied. So I've been looking in guitar shops but I get totally intimidated when staff ask me if I want to try anything that's there. The answer is yes, but I'm embarrassed that they will think I'm a massive twat when rather than soloing up and down the neck I just plonk out some barre chords. Are my fears justified?

Train up to play Stairway you are good to go.
In honesty - I think they would much prefer someone who does something in line with their needs rather than attempt to show-off which must be way more frustrating. I think they'll just leave you to plonk around and check in.
I seem to remember Hobbes might have bought a guitar recently. I don't think he told anybody exactly what one though - he was very quiet about it.

if they know what their job's worth, they'll not care how good you are, they just want you to spend your money. So they should make you feel at ease and will try to find out what you want and how much your budget is. The people who annoy them most are time wasters.

What they all said. Guitar shop people will either not give a shit, or hate everyone who comes in, irrespective of their ability. Go enjoy yourself. Get them to throw in a set of strings, a gig bag and a strap.
On a different subject, had anyone seen dglh recently? I wanted to test the ignore poster button.
My guitar is a Freshman FA400DCEF. It's beautiful.

You will all be THRILLED to hear that I have bought a guitar - went for the Gretsch G2420. Very nice man in the shop, I spent half an hour at the back playing Beatles songs and am very happy with my choice. Got all the extras you mentioned Hobbes, cheers. Just waiting to get home and plug in now.

I've just bought this:
https://www.dawsons.co.uk/epiphone-l...uitar-turqoise £85 including postage.
My Gretsch, (which was Adam Ant's) is too heavy for me, generally, although it has a gorgeous tone.
I found the Danelectro easier, and seeing Dick Dale clips this week has made me hanker for a lighter plank. Plus it doesn't matter so much if it gets bashed around, I can leave it out on the stand.

I got this website in my Facebook feed the other day: https://shoprcrljv.tw
However their prices are too good to be true.

This is ridiculous. It's close to what I have (the ex Adam Gretsch).

I got this set-up recently second-hand on eBay for €90--an Orange Micro Terror. The speaker cab's only about 30 cm x 30 cm but it's surprisingly loud. The head is a hybrid solid-state/vacuum tube affair. Apparently it can drive much bigger speakers. It's terrific value for what I paid for it..

I forgot to post on here. I let nostalgia overtake my senses and got myself a Steinberger Sprit Pro to replace my old Hohner G3T which has a catastrophically fecked tuning system.
To be honest, it's not as great as I remembered.

I really should drag my Fender Precision out of the case where it hides (down between the wardrobe and the wall in my daughter's room).
I never was much cop with it, but I lucked out when my mother took me to buy my first bass (yes, spoilt kid). I was quite happy if I got a Squier but the shop had run out. My dear, dear mother sprang for a Japanese one, bless her.
Black, and it had to be a Precision because Steve Harris played one. When my tastes in metal blackened, I got a five string but simply couldn't get on with the shorter scale length and skinny feel of the neck in general, so I sold it on.

When I retired last year, buying a bass guitar was near the top of my mental list of 'Things I Plan To Do With My Time Now'. For one reason or another I have yet to do so (a fate shared by most other entries on that list sadly) but this thread makes me think that I really ought to get my act together. I used to have a left-handed Ibanez (Rickenbacker copy), Marshall 50 watt valve amp and a big old Sound City speaker cabinet that weighed a ton, but sold the lot over 35 years ago as I never found the time to play and it was just gathering dust in the spare room. If I knew how to do it I'd link to a thread I remember starting way back when I first joined the board that detailed my musical humiliation at the hands of a precocious 15-year-old drummer who had played with Jeff Beck.

So. TLMG asked me what I wanted for Christmas and, as usual, I had no real idea. I mean, I don't NEED anything, so asking for stuff is just frivolous. With that in mind, she's bought me one of these:

I'm actually pretty excited, truth be told.
