OTF mixes redux. (Plus Soundcloud vs. Mixcloud)

Right, then. I've done a mix!

It's my first ever 'proper' mix. That is, with tracks (mostly) merging into one another, edited down from their original lengths, their volume tweaked, etc, etc.

Now, ambient/atmospheric stuff isn't really my specialist area, so it's a bit clumsy in places, I think. Also, the first third or so is pretty heavy going - it may be most up the streets of Wingco and Diggedy Derek, I think. However, I've been meaning to do this mix for over a year, so I thought I'd finally better get down to it. Having done so, I'm quite pleased with it right now ...though I may not be tomorrow when I listen to it again! (I normalised it quite brutally, so I fear there may be artefacts in places, sadly.)

Anyway, the download link is here and the tracklisting is below, with links to the source albums/artists (on Discogs) behind the track titles. As is my usual wont, I've uploaded it to Divshare, so you can listen to it online with their built-in player, if you want (although much of the detail will be lost, of course). If anyone wants it uploaded to anywhere else, please let me know.

Oh, and for want of a better title, I've simply labelled it 'Quiet', even though it's very much not, in places!

I, errr... hope you enjoy it!

      Thanks.

I have to admit that I kind of 'missed the boat' on this one a bit, though. Ever since I first considered doing this mix, I've noticed there have been loads of similar 'atmospheric' mixes from the likes of Fact Magazine, The Quietus, etc, etc. I really regret not doing it when I first had the urge (which was after I'd heard the first and last tracks on the mix for the first time, actually - they were what inspired it).

On the other hand, the first draft of the mix I made, about 6 months ago, had loads of other tracks too, but the benefit of taking my time was that I was able to cut away a lot of what would have really just been dead wood. More than its current 50 minutes would have been pushing listeners' patience and credulity, I think.

Nice set Clive. Is that song with the french lyrics at the 40' mark by Sheila Chandra?

Thanks, Linus. It's a bit of a departure for me, I admit, so I'm glad you still could tolerate it. :-)

What I'll do is apend the tracklisting (repeated below) with track start/finish times and some other notes.

            -

            01. The Conet Project - 'Spanish Lady (2 finals)' 0'00'' - 1'34''

            02. Electronic Eye - 'Harmonic Medication' 0'00'' - 6'21''

(Yep - both the first two tracks started at the 0'00'' mark! The intro to 'Harmonic Medication' is so drawn-out (and quiet at the start) that I found it actually pretty much mixed itself in very nicely as it was! Cheat!!!)

            03. Antti Rannisto - 'Numbers' 4'02'' - 6'42''

            04. Orphx - 'City Limits' 5'54'' - 11'04''

(This is the track that I thought of when the 'night bus trip' was mentioned. It's just noises of a city, treated.)

            05. Oren Ambarchi - 'Fever, a Warm Poison' 10'42'' - 21'05''

(If you think this is long, I can tell you that it's edited down from its original length of nearly 18 minutes!)

            06. Main - 'Reformation (Expansive)' 20'53'' - 26'57''

            07. Disco Inferno - 'Summer's Last Sound' 26'57'' - 32'33''

(From the EP of the same name. One of the most strangely unsettling records I know!)

            08. Shriekback - 'In: Amongst' 31'52'' - 33'00''

(Edited down from its original 2'11'' length)

            09. Biosphere - 'Le Grand Dome / Grandiflora' 32'50'' - 39'16''

(Yes, I merged these two tracks together.)

            10. Chris Watson - 'Woodpigeon Wings Past Mics, Coille Na Ulaidh, Glen Affric, Scotland' 39'11'' - 39'21''

(Believe it or not, I had to fade this track in and out, so as to cut down a lot of other birdsong in the background. Chris Watson would hate me!)

            11. In The Nursery - 'Sinistral' 39'17'' - 42'24''

(This will be the track you mean, Linus. If anyone knows where that whispered dialogue comes from, I'd be interested to know. I had to let this track run to its end, just so you can hear the sound of the film spool spinning to a stop. A lovely detail, I think.)

            12. Beatsystem - 'No Jumping Up and Down / Spooky Action at a Distance' 42'20'' - 45'35''

            13. Sheila Chandra - 'Is' 45'11'' - 48'25''

(I cropped the first 43 seconds off of this. A shame, really, as it demonstrates her mastery of the vocal technique used to train mrdingam and tabla players in India. You still get to hear a tiny bit of it at the start and end of this extract, though. It's quite spectacular and worth checking out on her tracks 'Speaking In Tongues', which are spread across her releases on the Realworld label ...and the album this track came from too, of course. More details here. Also, I know that her vocal drone isn't quite in tune with that at the end of the previous track, but I kind of liked that strange dissonance, so I left it. It seems to create harmonics of its own.)

            14. Hoodlum Priest - 'The Hammer Speaks' 47'43'' - 49'13''

(Yes - a track that is purely the sound of a Harley engine revving! Four and a half minutes of it, in its unedited form! It was difficult to know where to fade it out.)

            15. Jean C. Roché / Bill H. Gunn - 'Wild Wolves In Canada: A Large, Very Excited Pack On The Other Side Of A Lake' 48'47'' - 50'13'' (end)

(I knew I wanted to do a mix with this track in, the moment I heard it! There's some very primal fear that's triggered by this sound - that of a pack of wolves getting together, ready to hunt - that is still in us, I think, even if it's at a very low level now. Slightly strange, really, since wolf attacks on humans are rare anyway. Like I say, it's a primal thing, I think. Anyway... this + aurora borealis = super-spooky!)

Incidentally, tracks that didn't make it:

The Hope Blister - 'Happiness Strings'
            Shriekback - 'Evaporation'
Chris Watson - 'Corncrake Songs From Territorial Males, Island of Coll, Western Isles, Scotland'
Disco Inferno - 'Love Stepping Out'
            ISAN - 'Meet Next Life'
Talk Talk - 'I Believe In You'
            Sufi - 'Desert Flower (Dub)'

Thanks for the expanded listings Clive, looking forward to listening to the mix again with the background details.

The spoken word content from In The Nursery is from one of my favourite movies, Cocteau's Orpheus (Orphée, 1949), hence the reel sounds. Translated:

"I deliver to you the secret of secrets: mirrors are the doors through which death comes and goes. To that effect, look at yourself all your life in a mirror, and you will see death at work, like bees in a glass hive"...

Cocteau was fascinated by mirrors, some of the most memorable scenes from Orphée are of characters going through mirrors, which was actually done by them poking their arms through a tub of mercury (this must have been quite toxic...)

I see! Makes sense, as Klive Humberstone - one of the twins who constitutes the band - has a Cocteau tattoo on his arm. They're big fans. I just haven't seen that yet. (In fact, the only Cocteau film stuff I've seen is a snippet of 'La Belle at la Bete'. I should rectify that.)

(By the way - I'm about to go public (on Facebook) with this mix ...having gained the approval of the only artists on there that I know! I've uploaded it to Soundcloud and given it the more prosaic/pretentious name of 'Caesura'. Hah!)

Excavating this thread, for a purpose.

I'd done a mixtape/playlist thing and it had been on Soundcloud for a year or so. Then, a couple of weeks back, they took exception to it and removed it!

So, what I've done is simply mixed it (with the tracks mostly just end-to-end, so no 'proper' mixing) and uploaded it to Mixcloud instead.

I think I've mentioned it before, here, but I'll do so again, just so people know where to find it.

Anyway, it's my tracks-possibly-inspired-by-70s-Kraftwerk mix, 'The Benevolent Ghosts Of Ralf & Florian', and it can be found here.

Following on from this, I'd be interested to know people's feelings regarding both Soundcloud and Mixcloud. Personally, I'm finding Soundcloud a bit too corporate, these days. I still use it, though.

I hope he won't mind me mentioning this here, but I was inspired to revisit that Kraftwerk-inspired mixtape because Wingco has done a Krautrock mix!

(That site went down, earlier on, though - something to do with them exceeding their storage on the domain or something.)
