Oooh, good thread idea! I love things like this, because it appeals to the geeky side of me (which is most of it!).
I haven't listened to that suggestion of yours, Crusoe, but the songs that have barged their way to the front of my mental queue are ones which are almost all intro, even though that isn't part of the criteria. Thus, 'The Spangle Maker' by Cocteau Twins and 'King Is White And In The Crowd' by Simple Minds spring to mind.
Really, they're just drawn-out, though. I'll have to get my thinking cap on!
Clive, why do I suspect you'll be posting a superlative list shortly?
Heh! No, I think I'll restrain myself to video postings this time out. :-)
Actually - I could commit my other sin of ranting on about Richard H. Kirk, who is a master of the drawn-out intro. I could devote an entire compilation on this topic to him, no trouble. Possibly the most extreme example is 'Datacrime' (under the moniker Electronic Eye) - 14'05'' and it only really gets going in the last minute! However, I can't find a video for that online, so this'll just have to do (and it is properly funky, too) : 'False Kings Of The Earth' by Biochemical Dread. 6'30''+ and it only really gets going over halfway through.
I can think of loads; Bela Lugosi's Dead, A Forest by The Cure, SOYCD as already mentioned, White Car in Germany by Associates, loads that layer on the guitar e.g Cartrouble by AATA (single version), Sylvia by Focus, Don't Fear the Reaper by the Blue Oyster Cult, Shake Some Action by the Flaming Groovies.
I'm thinking of the full 11-and-a-bit minute version, but can't find it on YouTube. It's got maybe 30 or 40 seconds of buildup before this clip starts.
Sam, G Man and other might be interested in El Michels Affair doing Walk on By - essentially a cover of a cover. However, as it's an instrumental it has no business being on this thread.
