Red is the colour of the new republic
Blue is the colour of the sea
White is the colour of my innocence
        Not surrender to your mercy.

Almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It's getting' kinda long, I coulda said it wasn't in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly,
Cause I feel like I owe it to someone.

(arguably the dumbest lyrics ever written)

Oh, and seeing as we approach the first anniversary of the 2010 World Cup, we cannot forhet Kn'aan (or however he apostrophises his nam) and that Wave Your Flag song.

I would ordinarily dislike that song, but nostalgia instructs me otherwise.

You say that, but Richey was still around for the "Suicide Is Painless" video...

Good point, though I think they kept a lid on the Welsh thing a lot more because of Richey's views on the Kinnock factor.

                                I can't imagine James playing the Hendixised version of 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' as the intro to 'Motown Junk' on this below (as he did on Saturday) in Richey's time. ;

I think that people had a fair idea that they were Welsh. For a while, at the start, they were the Welshest band in the world.

What was Richey's views on the Kinnock Factor? Why didn't that TV show make it as big as it should have

                                    Cowell's regional bias, innit?

Just like him stabbing our poor Cheryl between the highly-defined shoulder blades.

At the start we never went around wearing Welsh credentials. Richey was really paranoid about ever coming across as Welsh. He always called it the Neil Kinnock factor. I've become more conscious of it lately. I've started to support the Welsh rugby side. Vanity Fair interviewed Sharon Stone recently: they asked her to name her favourite Irish author and she said Dylan Thomas. Things like that wouldn't have annoyed me before, but they really do now.

Although I can't quite square the "started to support the Welsh rugby side" bit.

I remember being told off by a very boorish City supporter because he saw Richey once being asked about being Welsh on some early TV show ( a Saturday morning childrens one I think, hard though it is to imagine) and replying (to paraphrase) " That's not important, I'm an internationalist".

Back in 1998 Nicky Wire wrote the preface to Mario Risoli's account of Wales in the 1958 WC. He definitely comes across as a dyed in the wool Welsh football fan.

Sorry I think my post was misunderstood. I was referring to the issue of Welsh nationalism involved, rather than the football vs rugby debate.

Oh man, whenever I see that cover the despair comes rushing back. And when I hear this particular song even more so. It was all about the pose after all. Talk about shattered idealism.

We are forces of chaos and anarchy
Everything they say we are we are...

                                                ...And we are very
                                                Proud of ourselves.
