Yes, it's a soundalike of 'canal route' coming the other way. ad hoc is correct about the rhyming slang.

(this is basically a guess based on the letters, the fact that there are notably canals in Amsterdam, and perhaps Hampstead Heath is rhyming slang for teeth, though I've never heard it before. I have no idea where root can be found in the clue)
