        Enthusiast shot by both sides following O'Connor's departure (8)

        (if my answer to the previous clue is correct I need it explaining fully)

          Capybara is correct. I throw myself on the panel's mercy for stretching the boundaries there...

          SHOT = anagram of 'host'

          [BY BOTH SIDES] = tortuous anagram indicator

          SHOT BY BOTH SIDES = late 70s postpunk classic

            Ta. It was the Tortuous Anagram Indicator (TAI) that partially threw me.

                  You could frame it that way, Kevin S.

                      I'll hurry this along as it's a bit niche and not a great clue either. And Guy might argue about it anyway.

                        Hope Basher is the correct answer and not my first thought of Begbie to your original clue

                            About whether they are the same thing, that's all.

                                  Not dash I'm afraid. Edit - though 'dash' does seem to work, so perhaps we should go with it as the fault is mine if I've set one with two answers.

                                    'Dash' might conceivably work if you exchange singular for plural in 'Hurries' and passive for active in 'holds fast.' For me that's enough contortion to take us back to Kev's clue.

                                      Now it's the "hurries on" that's stumping me
