    That convention looks out of date to me. If the letters are in the right order and it looks more elegant (or less inelegant) why do capital letters matter?

    Generally, conventions change over time. When I started doing cryptics as a teenager, it helped to like cricket and know some Latin. Nowadays, anything indexed by Wikipedia or even Google is fair game.

    And of course this thread alone has nearly 25,000 posts. That's plenty of precedent

      I've learned something, then. It's not something I've really come across, or noticed, before. I've generally assumed when solving that it sometimes pays to ignore case and punctuation.

        Fair enough, Dunc; I was pointing to what I believe is still the convention in 'proper' crosswords - although recently I noticed my editor at 1 Across using 'heath' as a reference to the ex-PM, so maybe I'm projecting my fogeyism.
