Nef- my answer/ following clue both
a) includes an 'N', and (arguably)
b) is a valid solution to yours- given that (to) stand is an acronym for stomach and- at a pinch- load. Compare loading and standing areas, say.
How about,

"Stand" is perfectly acceptable and apologies for my poor setting
But Standard is not a 5 letter word and I didn't spot "stand" hiding in there.

Am I missing something, or did we not have three clues in a row from Duncan there?

Good spot, Hof - and it's at least questionable whether the use of 'broads' is integral to the clue for FEISTY, though I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the supposed newcomer Kevin Thingy.
Whither now?

Well spotted lads.
Hof- think of the latter pair as two halves of the same clue. Piss-artstic licence, what?
Irony- yes, there's a major error in there, as I was distracted listening to the archery finals. It should read,
If the Iraqi broads (fit, tasty) end up excited...(6)

Got it, DG.
May, perhaps = MONTH
-> hide in S(outh) TO ROUSE
Now I wish that March had been the month that came to mind...
