Although I remember reading an analysis of Morecambe and Wise's humour and what made them special. It concluded that they'd started out as a conventional double act, but when Eddie Braben took over from Hills and Green as their sciptwriter he changed the dynamic so that Ernie Wise essentially played the role of a funny man who wasn't funny (all that "the play what I wrote" stuff and so on), with Eric Morecambe as the straight man who was funny.
