(as an aside - I wanted to not include the word "Bradley in my clue, and at the last minute decided to as otherwise I though it might be unfair. Do you think it would have been?)
Yeah, I think you made the right choice. It's tricky, because you don't want to make it too easy, but that would have made the number of links in the solving chain a bit too long, for my money.
But I seem to set easier-than-average ones on this thread, I think, so perhaps I need to toughen the fuck up.
I'm not sure. I suppose the instinctive reaction when you see your clue solved in five minutes is that you've made things to easy, but I don't think it's necessarily so. For me, the pleasure in solving a crossword clue derives from two things: the satisfaction in overcoming a challenge and a delight in the elegance of a well-worked clue - and I think the latter outweighs the formed. I take much more delight in a clue that is well-wrought and witty but which clicks into place quickly than one that takes days (and lots of hints) to unravel and leaves you with a bit of a "is that it?" feeling at the end.
As a setter, I feel I've failed a bit if I have to give hints.
