    (PS little help on some of the details of the previous clue?)

      When his missiles come, never turn your back on Mother Earth; parts turned red, if bombed (7,7)

      The definition runs as far as 'back'

      on Mother, Earth -> E + MA

      parts = goes inside

      anagram (bombed) of 'turned red, if' -> FREDDIE TRU ... N

                    Sheesh.

                      The nit was well-picked nonetheless, Guy. Parsing now amended above.

                                        Can someone explain millimetre please? I had this from the definition and the letters provided but couldn't justify it further. Ta.

                                          I got as far as LIME TREE (with the end cut off), preceded by "MIL" somehow which I couldn;t really work out, but just went with it

                                                  Mil = 1000 when writing French dates eg 1300 = mil trois cents. Robert II aka Robert le Pieux was King of France in the year 1000, hence for him mil was the end of the century (fin de siecle).
