    Not-so-current gaming

    In a SNES mood:

WeaponLord - still as brutally difficult as I remember. Can't get past the second opponent without cheating even after learning the moves. SNK's output is a piece of piss compared to this.

Stunt Race FX - has not held up. At all. The tiny play window, the slip-slidy handling, the single figure frame rate.

Zoop - imagine if Tempest and Columns had a baby. It's frantic, it's psychological warfare and I love it.

Picked up Okami HD for the Switch, as I never did finish it on PS2. It looks stunning.

I bought SoulStar for the Mega CD the other day. It also includes a demo disc for... SoulStar. Surely this can't have been deliberate but things were different in 1994.

Replayed Portal 2 recently. Still completely magnificent in just about every way. Everything about it should be taught in game design classes from now until the fiery end of eternity.

Even with the hacked Mini, I've just spent another £60 on SNES cartridges. I'm fucked, aren't I?

Add me to the SNES Mini club - they had one in stock at GAME at RRP, I had a gift card left over from Christmas and a bit on my reward card so it was almost half price!

I'm gonna be watching Hakchi tutorials on YouTube, get me some more games on this thing.

Mrs Thistle completed Yoshi's Island ages ago and is now going back through the levels to get 100 points on all of them to open up extra levels. Having seen the one extra level she has opened so far, I'm not going to bother. But as I'm very, very slowly progressing through world 6 towards the ultimate showdown with the evil critter who stole baby Luigi and caused Yoshi to embark on his quest, the whole point may be moot. I may never get there.

OMG what little SNES skills I had have atrophied!!

A lot of Yoshi's have died!
I got one of them over Christmas myself. Is it just me or is StarFox a bit more difficult than it used to be?

As part of my voluntary work, on Saturday I will be function testing 24 Amstrad CPCs and 21 ZX Spectrums. How the hell I'm gonna be able to do all that in four hours, fuck knows.

Did two more Zelda dungeons and got the Master Sword plus beat the wizard to get into the dark world this evening.

Mrs Thistle has overtaken me on Yoshi's Island. I'm stuck in a castle halfway through world 5. I fucking hate the castle levels. I eventually got through the skiing level.

Tried Super Metroid. I can survive the levels that are just Samus riding in a lift.

Life took over. No progress whatsoever. Ain't gonna happen in 2017.

Thanks for checking in though! Gave me a chuckle.

Haha. I get that way with SMW; often just run straight into the first enemy and die in about three seconds. Yoshi, though, I've got him fluttering round and wanging eggs like a dream.

I don't mind Yoshi's Story - it's good to have something relaxing to play for half an hour because of how ridiculously easy it is.

As for my HD MD (as it were)... well, it works nicely most of the time but I have found a few issues:
    - Virtua Racing doesn't work (not really a surprise due to the SVP chip).
    - Super Street Fighter II boots to a black screen (maybe the fact it's a large capacity cart - 32 meg in old money).
    - Sonic & Knuckles has some horrific audio clipping for the SFX (especially when the Flying Battery swoops down at the end of Mushroom Hill Zone).
    - Mega Bomberman doesn't have most of the music and the effects play at random and distorted to the point where it sounds like an Atari 2600 game.

    Probably the N64, Yoshi's Story:

The Wii and GameCube didn't have a 2D Yoshi game. In fact, now I look at it, it was this N64 one which I downloaded onto the Wii and never really got on with.

So yeah, in summary of Yoshi platformers:

    Yoshi's Island - SNES - awesome
    Yoshi's Story - N64 - disappointing
Yoshi's Island DS - DS - very good
    Yoshi's Woolly World - WiiU/3DS - not played

No. I never had a DS. I tried the N64 or Gamecube one but didn't like it. Can't remember which console it was now.

Yep, soon to clock up five hours on Yoshi's Island according to the save timer. Interestingly I realised/remembered that I'd also downloaded it on Wii several years ago, and played it using my GameCube controller. But somehow it didn't feel as right as it does with a proper SNES controller.

You can switch it on, play for just five to ten minutes, and you'll feel like you've actually been playing, rather than just 'warming up' or 'catching up'.
I only just found out that Yoshi's Island is on this. Will be buying one now considering the last time I saw a cartridge for sale it was £60!
