Yeah it can be at first, but the moves you can add as the game progresses keeps it interesting for us. That, plus how ridiculously OTT the violence is, it's working on Tom and Jerry levels.
My wife and I have been taking it in turns, an hour each or as and when one of us get stuck. It's helped combat any fatigue, and has been a nice loosener for me, having started a Finnish language course last week as part of my integration plan here.
I have been left with the feeling that my wife also likes Japanese ladies in bikinis, such is her dedication to the porny pokemon mini game.
Can't blame her to be honest.

What The Golf? is currently ?12 on Switch, and is good, silly fun.

EDIT: I see the board is still struggling with symbols.

I’ve been working through Assassin’s Creed Origins (the Egyptian one). Lots of fun, though getting a bit predictable and grindy now. Cleopatra (dodgy British accent aside) and Caesar were fun. I could live without the painfully dull Abstergo/modern day bits though.

You can basically ignore them and go back to ancient times almost immediately. I think I spent 5 minutes total in the modern day.

Anyone else watch the PS5 reveal? Pretty predictable for the most part and I can't say all that many games blew my socks off visually, though the feed quality wasn't great. I think the game I'm most intrigued by is Arkane's Deathloop. The various sequels all have the potential to be excellent but I can't say they showed anything from them to get super excited about, maybe Ratchet & Clank aside as it's been ages since we had a properly new Ratchet. Of the new IP, some of them had lovely art, but we didn't really see meaningful gameplay for me to get excited about.

Horizon 2 looked beautiful but the script of the trailer was silly and portentious.

So was the script of the first game, to be fair.

I really liked the story from the first game.

I'm not upholding the Bushido code very well. The overhead assassination is just too much fun.
I guess I was born to be a Ninja rather than a Samurai.

I speak of course of Ghost of Tsushima, which is a fairly bog standard open worlder but with some great combat action and a good balance of stealth and hack'n'slash.
The collectibles are a bit tiresome (although even the annoying fox dens do contribute something.) AND you seem to follow and enormous number of footprints. Some variety would have improved things.
There's a nice line in examination of Bushido and it's application in a contemporary (for the game) world.
The voice actors are pretty good too. So all in all, I rather like it.
I noticed GY was playing it the other night. Any thoughta?

I thought this article was a good companion piece to the game. I feel I should say I'm not trying to spoil your enjoyment of the game but I'm very interested in how history and games interact, but then I'm the guy who stopped playing Crusader Kings thanks to it's lack of historical verisimilitude (mostly about economics)

Pretty much this. It's decent, but could be so much better. I'm quite tolerant of faults in open world games, and I'm a sucker for the setting, so I'm enjoying it, but I think it's going to get pretty repetitive soon. I'm already pacing myself a bit so I don't burn out. Still, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is out on Gamepass tomorrow, so that will be an interesting counterpoint.

                        Edit: Yakuza is out today!

This review has a link to Waypoint Radio's really good discussion of the game's relationship to real Japanese history/culture. I recommend giving that a listen. Certainly if verisimilitude is what you're after, this game won't be for you.

I don't mind something stupid and unrealistic in any media. It only annoys me when a product, any product is sold as being faithful and falls short.

But then I do wonder what impressions things make on consumers. How often is a "historical" backdrop in a fantasia being taken as accurate when all it is is colour?

Or, for that matter, when basically all of Western audiences' understanding of, say, samurai or indeed feudal Japanese history in general, has been mediated through 20th century popular culture, Western and Japanese, rather than historians or contemporary accounts.

A rare foray into this thread to say that Deliver Us the Moon might be worth looking into if you have XBox Game Pass.

It's a puzzle / exploration game involving you getting off the Earth - which is a dustbowl due to consumption of resources - to fix the power transmitter on the Moon that suddenly stopped working and the colonists disappeared. As you work your way through, you discover the fate of the colonists and the people sent to find out what went wrong. It's not perfect by any means - the controls can be very fuzzy at times - and descends into cliches it had previously been avoiding for the final level but if you can persist past that, the story has a very subtle payoff at the end.

You can probably complete it within 6 hours and there is nothing in the way of shooty bang bang or anything. If you click with it by the time you get to the Moon, it's worth battling the controls to the end.

Another Game Pass recommendation from me: The Touryst. Again, about 6 hours if (like me) you 100% it and get all ten achievements. No, that's not a humblebrag, it's pretty straightforward to do and I enjoyed it so much I just kept plugging away with it.

                                  Give it a go.

I persist with Destiny 2. I think it's Stockholm Syndrome at this point.

EDIT: Although I actually really like the loot system and the upgrade trees. Once you get your head around them and find a build that works for you, it works.

Flight Simulator 2020 is out (including on Game Pass) in less than 24 hours. Less than an hour, if you're in Kiribati. Very excited indeed, and kind of annoyed I didn't time my mandatory staycation a bit better.

Wow, this is really crushing my desktop's CPU, guess it's time to start thinking about an upgrade. Works OK on my laptop, albeit at a lower resolution. Looks absolutely amazing, as long as you're flying in the countryside or over a photogrammetry city. London looks a bit crappy (though still way better than most previous flight sims.

This week is new gaming hardware week apparently. Embargos lifted on the new Nvidia graphics cards, Sony revealed pricing and a few more games for PS5, and Oculus/Facebook unveiled their new VR headset.

So far, I'm thinking I'll be getting a 3080, won't be getting a PS5 until at least late next year, and won't be getting a Quest 2, but probably will be getting an HP Reverb 2.

Playing the Avengers game on PS4. The fight mechanics are really nice for each character, but after a strong opening the game gets dull and repetitive REALLY quickly. And the campaign is really far too short for a AAA game. I reckon I did it in 3 evenings. And I'm slow at games.

Rocket League is currently free on the Epic Games store, and PS4, Xbox and Switch.

I've been playing it for a few hours, and I can see how it's fun, but I feel like I'm getting too old for this kind of game. The whole thing passes me by in a blur.

Received an email that said Untitled Goose Game is now available on Steam. That's my weekend sorted, then.

Just found an Android app (there's also an iOS version) that does head tracking for flight sims. Works seamlessly in MS Flight Simulator 2020 and is doing a great job as a stopgap until my HP Reverb G2 headset shows up some time in November/December (assuming VR support is patched in by then). Kind of remarkable how simple and effective it is compared to the faff involved in doing headtracking in Elite Dangerous before I got my Rift.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light drops on Tuesday and, as I am still hopelessly involved with the bloody thing, I have pre-ordered.
