On surprisingly acceptable words, Mrs. NS got away with POIRE recently. The generic name for French perry, which would obviously make sense, but I don't recall coming across it before.

I keep thinking I should make a list of all the bizarrely accepted words I've seen on this thread, as I rarely get around to asking what some of them even mean.


Meanwhile, was making very heavy weather of things today and I had to take a good long while after turn three to think of anything at all, but did eventually ENJOY the realisation when it dawned on me:

I thought it might be a synonym for "earthy" but apparently it's another name for a sod house, a building constructed from turf, that is.

A poire is also an ingenious little rubber ball with a long spout that you can buy in French chemists. Used to unblock your ears after swimming. I never go on holiday without it.
