DANDY was my first thought for the second guess but I went for the more American option, which is a mistake I've made before.
The third word was just an attempt to thin out the options or flag up the missing letter, which worked, though there could have been even more possibilities than sprang to mind.
I walked away from CANDY too, and B
ANDY as well for the opposite reason. Come to think of it, in retrospect, HANDY might have unwanted connotations across the pond as well.
A useful second guess as well as inspiration from a recent visit to Xpert11 gave me a delightful 3. I expect nmrfox will find similar inspiration if the word of the day is FLUFF or WHOFT.

As if it hadn't gone badly enough already before that fourth attempt got me at least vaguely on track, I was legitimately stunned when VISOR wasn't correct. Was just getting quite legitimately angry that they'd chosen its really obscure alternative spelling of VIZOR, but was a split-second away from submitting it – as clearly no other letter worked ("...vi-for, vi-gor, vi-hor, vi-jor... nope, nope, nope...") – when I suddenly spotted what was happening. So at least I got to remain angry at their actual selection. Fuxake.
