Is this a new puzzle Duncan? First task is to post the solutions yes? I think these are right (some great clues btw):

                      A - Aspire
                      C - Cent
                      D - Definition
                      E - Enhance
                      F - Fashion
                      H - Hooray
                      L - Latvia
                      M - Maurice

I can see a few more but I’ll stop here to give someone else a turn

I’ll just chuck a few more into the mix, as nobody else seems to be around:

                          N - No Exit
                          O - Oxygene
                          Q - Quince
S - Salopia. (Not 100% sure on this one)
                          U - Universe
                          V - Vegan Diets
                          W - Wife Murder

I’ll have a go at the grid next - might help with a few more answers ..

.. and it did! Duncan, I’ve managed to solve this, including all the placements into their grid positions. There is one answer I am not 100% sure on but which I could hazard a good guess. I won’t put any details here because other people might want a crack at it. I have to say it’s been a really enjoyable puzzle, very much in the style of my all time favourite compiler Araucaria. I can’t give you higher praise than that. Thanks very much for your skill and hard work
