    N = Navy.
    T = Two Hours.
    X = Xanadu.

    I'll leave the rest to somebody who understands the rules.

        I'll drop one in (somewhere), DG – for H I can see only as far as Horizon.

        I'm thinking we'll have an easier job trying to get a whole bunch of answers before we start trying to assemble them in the grid, it has to be said. Where's that harmonica solo while we're waiting?

          Q is Qatari. I'm not familiar with their musical preferences.

                            Can you explain to this bear of little brain why there are multiple answers (e.g.D and Y) please?

                              Because in the grid there are two places where you need two words starting with the same letter (bottom right hand corner)

                                    Actually it must be M _ A _ I _ because of the Y words

                                      I just read the quick clue by accident for M, and that makes it sound like Mielie – the polenta-like maize flour stuff used in SA is mielie-pap. And that I think would tie in with mealy for 'euphemistic' in the cryptic clue. Doesn't fit with your M_A_I_E hypothesis though AH, am I barking up the wrong tree here?

                                        Is there any reason (I;m struggling to see one) why they can't be entered in two possible ways? I think they can. Just a choice regarding the down/across. (So, for example, the Down clue that starts at D1 is either NAVY or ZANY, and actually it doesn;t matter which you choose, since that will determine where everything else can go

                                        I think.

                                                  Thanks all for the interest and kind comments.

                                                  Generally, it's fun putting these together. The cryptic clues take rather longer than you might think compared with filling the grid. That's partly because there's a broad formula for the latter- 10 letter words starting with X tend to go in early, 4 letters led by R near the end

                                                  Specifically on the puzzle above, as you've noticed it's symmetrical- imagine a dividing line from top left to bottom right corner: the two halves are mirror images. So there are 2 complete alternative solutions (strictly speaking 4 as AH mentioned). 26 of the solutions each have 2 possible positions, both of which determine where the other 25 solutions should go. The final 2 solutions (starting with N and Z) also have 2 possible positions, but they don't determine the other 26 as AH says.

                                                  And you had a further clue with the HORIZON and UPRIGHT solutions

                                                  Thanks as ever to my trusty editors Prue and Frieda.
