Having had a notification from my phone app, I just loaded up the live footage from the cameras on the outside of the International Space Station, for the first time in a couple of weeks – and as I morosely watched the cloudtops race serenely by somewhere south of Australia, it struck me the safest place of all that any human beings are likely to be in during the coming months is aboard the ISS.

I suppose it's too late and too cheaty to change my nomination now.


More seriously, though, it strikes me that this presents a unique challenge to our present spacefarers and those scheduled to head up there any time soon to take over from them. Presumably everything to do with spaceflight involves phenomenal levels of sanitation and screening for any contagious diseases at the best of times, but I still wonder if manned flights may get cancelled for the immediate future. I think if I'm an astronaut, cosmonaut, scientist etc. up on the ISS right now, I'm wondering if my tour of extraterrestrial duty is suddenly going to get extended by 3 months, 6 months, 9 months...? That's no minor consideration to have to adjust to.

I can’t think of any that haven’t been picked except maybe Antarctica. It’s not a country, but there are a bunch of scientists and support staff there. I suspect they may have stopped anybody from coming in there and are just accepting supply drops. It will be winter there soon and only a few people stay there all winter.

Right, I've done a bit of an update and added all the 'joke' / outlier suggestions in their own category. Though, if we actually get to a point where Sealand, Antarctica and the ISS are infected, continued availability of internet might be a more relevant factor.
