    The Final, then

Can't see a thread yet. Is there one?

Assuming Im not being blind and this is the only thread, let's discuss.

The Dutch have followed through and clattered the US player on just about every tackle in the first ten minutes. To the point where if can't be random, misjudgements or over-ethusiasm but has to be a deliberate attempt to physically intimidate. Fortunately the ref appears aware and has brandished a yellow card to Spitse already. Hopefully that deals with it.

They have previous in World Cup finals....

Lavelle is fantastic to watch. Dunn is also having a good game. Dutch keeper looks suitably up for it.

That was a good save from van Veenendaal just now, for sure.

And the Dutch coach has apparently noted the same thing Wouter did during the US Semi - balls straight down the middle between the Centre-Backs are a route to success.

Pre-emptive strikes. USA not known for being meek and mild.

Holland's men put in a similar display when they last reached a World Cup final of course. That said, the Dutch have dug in well, but their final balls have been terrible

No, but they tend to be clean. The Dutch ones were not. The US are just stronger physically than all the other Women's sides, which is why their players come out on top of one-on-one tussles for the ball so often. That is the big advantage they still have, and a major reason why they are no.1. The others have caught (but not passed) the Americans on technique, its conditioning where they have the edge.

Wonderful save there by van Veenendaal. Then a more fortunate one. The US scoring feels a matter of time...

How the hell was that not a penalty to the US? the point of a shoulder charge like that is that you emerge in control of the ball. Otherwise it's just a push.

Was that a dive from Morgan, USA fans?

                        And another!

Oh, and there was an arm in the middle of Morgan's back in the 'dive'/easy flop. That is against the rules. Should have been a pen.

Yes. But also a foul by the Dutch defender. The push came first, it should have been a pen as there is nothing in the rules to say a push is only a foul if its forceful enough to knock a player off their feet.

Morgan is a real athlete. (I mean they all are but she is just a cut above.)

Careless by O'Hara there. Or a cracking headbutt if you don't want to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Quite. FIFA has got scared by the number of penalties that were being given. So, apparently, the rampant cheating by defenders in such situations is not going to be clamped down on after all. Forwards will have to keep diving, then.

What does that have to do with anything. Virtually any contact with a forward in the penalty area that doesn't win the ball first is a penalty, and the dutch player fair ploughed into her. People may not like this, but those are the actual laws of the game. There should be way more penalties until defenders stop defending this way.

Do you think she would have had a better chance of the Dutch foul being punished if she had stayed on her feet?

If (and it's a huge if) a team can get the ball into the USA box then their defence doesn't look particularly reliable.

Mind you keeping them out of your box is more of an issue.

Dutch definitely finishing the half the stronger there. But you have to think the US can step up another gear in the second half.

Oh come on. Take your stars and stripes shades off. Rampant cheating? A minute ago it was the USA are so much stronger and more athletic which is why they win physical contests. Then the little flowers are getting pushed over by thugs.

Talking of rampant cheating, did you see the yellow card for a professional foul when the Dutch were attacking on the break?
