QF 2: Les Bleues v La Résistance

Big hype for the false final. Always cool to have the hosts in for as long as possible, especially when they’ve set the country’s young female support alight these past three weeks. But I have big love for this US women‘s team, and part of me wants them to win the whole thing and then collectively tell the White House rapist to go fuck himself.

More than anything, though, I hope this is a ripping, close and highly entertaining game.

If France fail to cause an upset, England's women (plus some invited guests I think) will be going to Tokyo 2020.

This can go two ways. It'll either be the epic contest that defines women's football in the 21st century or, more likely, two teams will cancel each other out in a boring snooze fest settled by a VAR retaken penalty celebrated in a callous unsporting manner.

USA persist with their lineup from the Spain game, leaving Alex Morgan starting and not bringing Lindsay Horan in to start. Most USA fans are done with Jill Ellis.

          b) sounds much more likely that a) in general circumstances. In a 30°C oven, it's almost certain.

It might be better for the game (sorry) if France wins. It will be a massive boost to women's soccer in France and a kick in the ass to the US to get out of it's complacency.

I understand the reasoning, and Jill Ellis may be replaced should the US lose, but I don't think there would be any structural changes made in the US.

Rory Smith of the NYT said a lot of smart things on the Second Captains podcast today, most importantly for me about how the US dominance in women's soccer is seriously under threat by European nations getting their programs together, and how much of that is down to our still persisting with collegiate soccer. Obviously the women's professional game in the US, where there's even less money and stability than in MLS, isn't ready to set up academies bringing in kids still in middle school and getting them on a path to becoming professionals after high school, so NCAA soccer is even more important for women than it is for men. And that's been fine for a long time, but with more European clubs starting to spend money on their women's teams, it looks like it's just a matter of time where it starts to look like men's professional soccer where Europe is the absolute pinnacle, and all of the other talented players from around the world are hoping to go there.

Coaches lie to the press about why they drop players. They do it to protect others. So Ellis picks Dunn ahead of a regular left-back because she doesn't really rate the left-back as a good enough player right now for this level so prefers someone playing out of position there. Does she tell the press "Yeah, Crystal isn't really a left-back but even so she is still a better left-back than the specialists left-backs I have available" and risk destroying the specialists confidence if Dunn is needed elsewhere in the side and that player (?Tierna Davidson) has to play? Course she doesn't. She obfuscates and says "Tierna/whoever is really good and has my absolutely and full trust, but I want to get Crystal into the team!"
Elsewhere on the pitch the calculus may be different. If her tactical plan dictates a role and she has two players both of whom she believes are capable, but one who is a neater fit than the other? Well, in that situation, she picks the horse for the course.

Indeed, I never understand why the media takes coach's explanation of roster moves at face-value. As if the players aren't reading/listening to the same thing.

Jonathan Pearce again, someone at the BBC really hates women's football.

Too much singing in the USA team. Be more Megan!

More simulation in the first 20 minutes of this game than I've seen in the rest of the tournament put together.

He is their lead commentator. He will get the highest profile games. Why is he their lead commentator? Because, quite a few years ago he, out of their regular roster of Football commentators (then all male) was either chosen or volunteered, probably the later, to take that job/do the research/watch the teams etc. He has covered the Women's game for the Beeb ever since. Maybe, in two World Cups time, the main female commentator they are developing (whose name I forget) will have the experience to be trusted with the main games. But not yet. Pearce/Smith are a certainty for England's Semi and the Final.
