It's one of my hobby horses but the sport really needs to look at awarding more free kicks inside the box rather than deeming most every foul in the box a penalty thus a free shot at goal from 12 yards.
Scenario: Attacking player does not have possession of the ball but they touch the ball with their back to the goal whilst they are moving away from goal on the edge of the box and no clear goal scoring opportunity has YET been created. There is slight contact but there is no suggestion that said contact has denied the attacking team a chance at a goal. Ref then awards a foul which equates to a dead ball shot from 12 yards with upwards of 75% chance of a goal being scored.
It's just not proportionate. Sorry, every foul inside the box should not be a penalty.

Quite. The entire penalty process needs to be altered or, better yet, abandoned altogether. As it stands, most of the time, the punishment is out of all proportion to the infringement.
I watched the Spain/USA game at a brewpub w/ many USA supporters - fortunately there was NOT a large cheer when the ref confirmed the iffy second half penalty call. We all knew that it was a joke of a call.
The non-calls for the tackles in the box are especially a joke because it always appears that the ref is just a few yards away and staring right at them!Last edited by Cal Alamein; 24-06-2019, 19:46.

If any bigot tuned in to this it would confirm their prejudices about women's football. Rubbish passing. Headless chickenry. Useless set pieces. Players unable to match the pace on the ball. Crowd already doing the wave within 20 minutes.
