It's one of my hobby horses but the sport really needs to look at awarding more free kicks inside the box rather than deeming most every foul in the box a penalty thus a free shot at goal from 12 yards.

Scenario: Attacking player does not have possession of the ball but they touch the ball with their back to the goal whilst they are moving away from goal on the edge of the box and no clear goal scoring opportunity has YET been created. There is slight contact but there is no suggestion that said contact has denied the attacking team a chance at a goal. Ref then awards a foul which equates to a dead ball shot from 12 yards with upwards of 75% chance of a goal being scored.

It's just not proportionate. Sorry, every foul inside the box should not be a penalty.

Quite. The entire penalty process needs to be altered or, better yet, abandoned altogether. As it stands, most of the time, the punishment is out of all proportion to the infringement.

Looking at the odds and the bookies are just making Canada marginal favourites, something like 55:45.

Hmmm. Enough gaps in the crowd you can see the PSG logo on the seats.

Some of the mascots are taller than the Canada players.

Better start than against the Netherlands, which was needed.

The Canadian commentators said that this match was voted "the most likely to go to penalties" in this round among the press corps.

I'm not sure an appeals process would work very well. There are typically very few truly "decisive" moments in a match. Goals, fouls in the box, red cards, that's about it really. Probably just a handful of these in total in most matches. You'd end up with pretty much every goal being challenged just in case there was something in the build-up that might technically be an infringement.

I didn't realise it was in Paris; I hope they have adequate drinks breaks.

Ye gods this is a game of over hit "passes" and wayward "shots"

Which is how it feels now with VAR anyway.

Canada needs more speed down the left. They can't beat Sweden by pumping high balls into the box. Someone has to run around the FBs, Riviere and/or Leon need to replace Beckie or Chapman.

Sweden being caught flat footed a few times by the lofted long ball, especially down Canada's right.

True, Prince has been doing well on the right but, Sinclair aside, Canada has no height up front. They need to get around the Swedish full backs.

Ha, the crowd in the Queen live bootleg I'm listening to has merged with and overtaken the crowd at the football, so it sounds like the game is really intense and 1970s.

They've now moved Beckie to the right. She might do better on that side.

I'm moving more and more towards this and Cesar's recommendation of a sliding scale of punishment depending on the degree of the foul.

I watched the Spain/USA game at a brewpub w/ many USA supporters - fortunately there was NOT a large cheer when the ref confirmed the iffy second half penalty call. We all knew that it was a joke of a call.

The non-calls for the tackles in the box are especially a joke because it always appears that the ref is just a few yards away and staring right at them!

If any bigot tuned in to this it would confirm their prejudices about women's football. Rubbish passing. Headless chickenry. Useless set pieces. Players unable to match the pace on the ball. Crowd already doing the wave within 20 minutes.
