    The squads

    England

Goalkeepers: Karen Bardsley (Man City), Mary Earps (Wolfsburg, DEU), Carly Telford (Chelsea)
Defenders: Millie Bright (Chelsea), Lucy Bronze (Lyon, FRA), Rachel Daly (Houston Dash, USA), Alex Greenwood (Man Utd), Steph Houghton (captain, Man City), Abbie McManus (Man City), Demi Stokes (Man City) Leah Williamson (Arsenal)
Midfielders: Karen Carney (Chelsea), Jade Moore (Reading), Jill Scott (Man City), Lucy Staniforth (Birmingham City), Georgia Stanway (Man City), Keira Walsh (Man City)
Forwards: Toni Duggan (Barcelona, ESP) Fran Kirby (Chelsea), Beth Mead (Arsenal), Nikita Parris (Man City), Jodie Taylor (Reign, USA), Ellen White (Birmingham City)

    Coach: Phil Neville (♂)

Most notable absentee - Izzy Christiansen, who was a racing certainty to be picked up until breaking her ankle playing for England in the SheBelieves Cup. Christiansen should be full fit by the time the tournament starts, but with others also having recent knocks (Bright, Kirby) it feels like too much of a risk, I guess. Presumably she is on standby, though.

Oh and Eni Aluko, Lianne Sanderson and Drew Spence. None of those three have played in quite a while now...

        Coach: Martin Sjögren (♂, SWE)

Notable absentee is, of course, Ada Hegerberg, i.e. the current holder of the Ballon d'Or. I think everyone respects her reasons for boycotting the event, that gender equality in Football is coming too slowly. But it's still a disappointment that she won't be there.
It also seems harsh on Norway that they are missing key players (Hegerberg's sister, Andrine, has also not made herself available for selection), given that they now pay their female Internationals the same as their male ones. Unlike, say, the USA. But they not only ones. Indeed Norway may well be the singleton here, they are probably further down the road to equality than anyone. But being the furthest along isn't the point, that just makes them the least worst. Which isn't good enough, either.

First squad announced, nearly two weeks ago now.
New Zealanders are nearly as adventurous as the Dutch, it seems.
CJ Bott sounds like she should be a CEO of a company in the American mid-west.

                    U! S! A!

Goalkeepers: Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars), Ashlyn Harris (Orlando Pride), Adrianna Franch (Portland Thorns)
Defenders: Becky Sauerbrunn (Utah Royals), Kelley O'Hara (Utah Royals), Abby Dahlkemper (North Carolina Courage), Ali Krieger (Orlando Pride), Tierna Davidson (Chicago Red Stars), Crystal Dunn (North Carolina Courage), Emily Sonnett (Portland Thorns)
Midfielders: Sam Mewis (North Carolina Courage), Morgan Brian (Chicago Red Stars), Julie Ertz (Chicago Red Stars), Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns), Rose Lavelle (Washington Spirit), Allie Long (Reign)
Forwards: Mallory Pugh (Washington Spirit), Carli Lloyd (Sky Blue), Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride), Jessica McDonald (North Carolina Courage), Megan Rapinoe (Reign), Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns), Christen Press (Utah Royals)

                    Coach: Jill Ellis

Lots of experience and name recognition amongst the US forward corps. Or are they... ageing? All of Lloyd, Morgan, Rapinoe, Heath and Press are the wrong side of their 30th birthdays, with commensurate caps totals of 100+ (271 in 36 year-old Lloyd's case). 100+ international goals for both Lloyd and Morgan as well.
Even neophyte Jessica McDonald (7 caps, 2 goals as per Wikipedia, which is my source on all of this) is 31. If youthful zest is required, then there is only Mallory Pugh to provide it. But she, with 50 caps and 15 international goals already and still only 21, may be well equiped to do so.

Goalkeepers: Sakiko Ikeda (Urawa Red Diamonds), Ayaka Yamashita (NTV Beleza), Chika Hirao (Albirex Niigata)
Defenders: Aya Sameshima (Kobe Leonessa), Rumi Utsugi (Reign, USA), Saki Kumagai (Lyon, FRA), Shiori Miyake (Kobe Leonessa), Risa Shimizu (NTV Beleza), Nana Ichise (Vegalta Sendai), Asato Miyagawa (NTV Beleza), Moeka Minami (Urawa Red Diamonds)
Midfielders: Mizuho Sakaguchi (NTV Beleza), Emi Nakajima (Kobe Leonessa), Yuka Momiki (NTV Beleza), Yui Hasegawa (NTV Beleza), Hina Sugita (Kobe Leonessa), Narumi Miura (NTV Beleza)
Forwards: Yuika Sugasawa (Urawa Red Diamonds), Mana Iwabuchi (Kobe Leonessa), Kumi Yokoyama (AC Nagano Parceiro), Rikako Kobayashi (NTV Beleza), Riko Ueki (NTV Beleza), Jun Endo (NTV Beleza)

                      Coach: Asako Takakura

Now, I don't know, having not kept up at all with the J-League (or whatever it's called), but I'm guessing NTV Beleza are the reigning champions, right? With Kobe Leonessa as their nearest challengers?

It's called the Nadeshiko League and yes it is dominated by NTV Beleza (based in Tokyo) and INAC Kobe, with Beleza being champions.

A few notable omissions from the squad, with the biggest surprise being the exclusion of Mina Tanaka (of Beleza) - top scorer in the League for the past three years and current League MVP.

Also missing are two of the 'veterans' from 2011 - Yuki Nagasato and Nahomi Kawasumi both of whom are currently plying their trade in the NWSL, although their exclusion was not so big a surprise.

It's quite a young squad with a number of players from last year's under 20 World Cup winning team, including 18 year old Jun Endo who could be the first player born in the 2000's to play at a World Cup (although I am sure there will be competition for that honour)

                            Dalila Ippolito (River Plate)
                            Virginia Gómez (Rosario Central)
                            Lorena Benítez (Boca Juniors)

                            Forwards:
                            Mariana Larroquette (UAI Urquiza)
                            Belén Potassa (UAI Urquiza)
                            Yamila Rodríguez (Boca Juniors)
                            Estefaní Banini (Levante UD)
                            Yael Oviedo (Rayo Vallecano)
                            Soledad Jaimes (Olympique Lyonnais)
                            Milagros Menéndez (UAI Urquiza)

On Saturday, UAI Urquiza beat River Plate away in a second-versus-first clash on the last weekend, to claim their second straight league title. Boca finished third. What can I tell you about the players? Not much. Only that Natalie Juncos grew up in the USA and is currently unattached because of an injury she picked up last year which has caused her to spend most of this season out recovering (my source for this is the player herself; she responded when I wondered on Twitter why the AFA listed her club simply as 'USA' on a previous squad list), and that Boca midfielder Lorena Benítez sounds like a multi-talented young lady, because as well as representing Boca and Argentina at football, she also plays for Kimberley and Argentina at futsal!

I'm guessing Soledad Jaimes is going to be the standout star, given the club she plays for. From the very little I've managed to catch of the season (a few highlights, and one of the friendlies Argentina played in the USA recently), Yamila Rodríguez looks like a scrappy, determined sort of forward, and Eliana Stabile does not appear to be related to 1930 men's World Cup top scorer Guillermo (because I assume if she was then it would be one of the first things I'd have read about her after googling just now).

I think that there are one or two names not on this list who my friend Tony, who follows women's football more closely than I do (indeed, he's going to the Women's World Cup) would have liked to see there, but I can't remember who they are at present. Interestingly, albeit not massively surprisingly, none of the fifteen players who last month became Argentina's first ever professionals when they signed contracts with San Lorenzo are included.

Oh, I should have clarified in case anyone isn't counting that that Argentina list is a provisional one. Three players will be cut from it on or before squad deadline day.

There are a fair few provisional squads out there. I'm ignoring all of them until the coaches get their fingers out and name their final 23s.

It seems this Spain squad is not the final one after all. The absence of any Barcelona players should have flagged that one up.

Over half the squad play in the States. Based on this, I am assuming if you happen across an athletic young woman in the US, there is a 50/50 chance she is an Australian Soccer player.
The most intersting player to watch might be Mary Fowler. She is only 16, and is the youngest player named to a squad so far.
And, obviously, the coaching thing. Milicic is on a hiding to nothing with how he came into the Matildas job.

The Brazil squad has been announced. Formiga is picked for her 7th (seventh) World Cup. Quite an achievement.

Poliana missed out on selection, but I am sure she is looking at that as a positive.

Typo or riff on the Pret/Eat thread?

                                              I genuinely don't know.

The real (not Real) Spain squad this time

Goalkeepers: Dolores Gallardo (Atlético Madrid), Sandra Paños (Barcelona), María Asunción Quiñones (Real Sociedad)
Defenders: Ivana Andrés (Levante), Celia Jiménez (Reign, USA), María Pilar León (Barcelona), Leila Ouahabi (Barcelona), Irene Paredes (Paris SG), Andrea Pereira (Barcelona), Marta Torrejón (Barcelona)
Midfielders: Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona), Marta Corredera (Levante), Andrea Falcón (Atlético Madrid), Patricia Guijarro (Barcelona), Victoria Losada (Barcelona), Silvia Mesuguer (Atlético Madrid), Alexia Putellas (Barcelona), Amanda Sampedro (Atlético Madrid), Virginia Torrecilla (Montpellier)
Forwards: Marion Caldentey (Barcelona), Lucía García (Athletic Bilbao), Nahikari García (Real Sociedad), Jennifer Hermoso (Atlético Madrid)

                                                  Coach: Jorge Vilda (♂)

No Real Madrid players. Because they don't run a Women's team. Which is telling...
