    What’s going on with France?

Three prominent players (Renard, Diane, Katoto), who most would consider highly likely starters, and one can’t help noticing also all have black skin, have announced relatively recently that they no longer want to be considered for selection for France. Which are deeply odd calls for a stalwart and long-time captain of the side in likely her last chance to win the World Cup due to age (Renard), or players in their mid-20s who ought to be close to their peaks (the other two). And now the coach, Corrine Diacre, has publicly claimed there is a smear campaign against her.

It all sounds horribly toxic. At the very least.

The Diacre regime sounds toxic and controlling to say the least.

The Spain situation has seen 15 players refuse to play for the national side since September, in protest at Jorge Vilda, his staff and their methods. I believe team selections, injury management. training sessions and dressing room atmosphere have all been cited. So far the federation has stood foursquare behind the coach.

Then there's the Canadian situation with their fight for pay equity.

Beyond anything that can be put down to personality clashes etc, it does seem that the common thread is federations not taking the women's game seriously enough to think sensitively about the demands put on their players and the rewards that they can reasonably expect.

It's so long I needed to retire to my study with my smoking jacket and pipe. She could start a fight in a cemetery.

I mean this is true, and Diacre is clearly difficult, but also true of almost anyone involved in French football, which may manage to even surpass Dutch football for infighting and personality clashes.

reading her wikipedia page, there seems to be something wrong with her on a fairly fundamental level, something that is very likely to be a part of her life outside of football. The fascinating thing I find looking at that page, is that she wasn't fired in 2019, leaving you to wonder what is it about the FFF that 10 years after the whole fucking raymond Domenech fiasco, they were still saying "Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong" about their team.

other than him being a walking talking ad for introducing a logan's run rule for people in positions of any sort of responsibility?

He was the single individual most responsible for Diacre remaining in post

It is very much not a coincidence that she survived only a few weeks after his defenestration

Why was he so keen on her? She seems to be obviously terrible?

She kept the players in their place (especially the outspoken Black ones)

Le Gräet believes that he is largely responsible for France's two World Cups

See that's exactly what it looks like. That's wild. Though, it's nearly 30 years since England appointed a manager to keep the colonials in check.

(Though I wouldn't rule out a return. They're big into retro nonsense at the moment)

Erm, not as long at all with the Women's side. There was a notable country missing from those listed up thread who had had significant players walk away from their national side long before age was a determining factor.

Hervé Renard, who has recently become the media favorite to take over the French wonen's team for the World Cup, resigned from his position with Saudi Arabia today.

Any word on this? This is an extraordinary position for a football association to adopt. traditionally losing the dressing room is considered the final straw, but losing most of your squad seems to be a step beyond.

Diacre is still under contract with the FFF, and as their opening gambit in negotiations, she and her lawyer have demanded not only the fulll amount that she is due through 2024, but that she also receive a premium equal to that paid Deschamps so as to respect the principle of "pay equity".

The total is a bit over 6 million euros.

We finally have news from Spain

Three of the 15 Spain players who staged a mutiny, writing to the federation to declare themselves unavailable for selection, have returned to the squad in time for the World Cup.

The Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has also been included in the preliminary list of 30 for Australia and New Zealand having finally overcome the knee injury that forced her to miss the European Championship last summer, as has Irene Paredes who first returned to the national team after a seven-month absence in March. Neither Putellas nor Paredes had sent the letter but both supported those who had.
