Is the Danish fairy tale to be tossed out of a window? - DEN v CZE

Denmark showed against first Russia and then Wales how well they have regrouped after the shock of the events of their opening game. And Czechia comfortably saw off the Dutch, in arguably the shock of the last 16. I hope neither side goes out with any regrets, after an entertaining game.

I like a good Thirty Years War reference in the afternoon.

Semi final appearances: Czech (incl Czechoslovakia) 5, Denmark 3. We all remember 1964, of course. (Well OK, I didn't even know Denmark were semi-finalists back then. Revise that conventional view of history, that says they did nothing before the 1980s).

Just looked it up - favourable draws in what was a full knockout tournament, beating Malta, Albania and Luxembourg (the last on a replay after drawing on aggregate - Luxembourg had beaten the Netherlands previously). Got beat 3-0 in the semi against the Soviet Union and then took Hungary to extra time in the third place play off, watched by less than 4,000 in the Camp Nou.

Do the spikes on the back of the keeper's gloves have any function, or are they there for the sake of coolness?

Free header for a corner that shouldn't have been given?

Are they actually 3D spikes or just part of the pattern.

Sure looked like. Rubbish defending either way

Prevents hyper extension injuries, the spikes prevent the fingers bending back.

They do appear to be spikes. Made of rubber/latex I suppose

                            Really? How does that work?

Ah! OK I'll just about buy that.

I would have thought anything like that might carry a risk of damaging an opponents eye, especially when a keeper connects with their head with a punch as Lloris did.

That long ball clearance and bounce wrong-footing the defender would have been an epic goal.

Bounce off the knee. Proper contact and that would have been Delaney's second.

Thanks goodness this is the last game in the Baku tomb, matches a curiously muted Czech anthem and then defensive performance on that corner.

It appears to be like an oven on the pitch.

So the spikes are "PREDATOR DEMONSKIN Raised control elements distributed across the knuckles provide texture and grip, delivering increased control and power to all punched clearances" while it's "ANATOMICAL FLEX ZONES" that are "Strategically positioned across the fingers and palm facilitate the natural movements of the hand, preventing bagging and offering flexion in all areas you need it most."

                                                Science, eh?

It's 82F/28C in Baku at 8 at night, with 62% humidity. Would explain why everybody looked slightly wilt-y even before the game kicked off.
