Tom Boyd's winner for Brazil in 1998, also in the opening game. Heartbreak.

Terry Butcher for Argentina in 1986.

Also, Carlos Gamarra nodded in Beckham's free kick after 3 minutes in England's opening game v Paraguay in 2006, the only goal of the game.

I still cling delightedly to what seemed like a very long period of time in the stadium that I thought that was an HRK goal, which it would have been had McAuley not lunged in.

Marcelo gifting Croatia the lead in 2014 is the only other occurrence of which I can think where an own goal opened a (major) tournament.

I knew someone would suggest this. But there's a behind the goal film angle which shows Maradona got the last touch.
