    Euro 2020 in beer

Six groups of four. You have to pick a winner from each group plus two beers you'd like to see progress as runners up to the quarter-finals. Nominations for who gets through the groups by midnight on Friday May 28th then I'll tot up results and do a quarter final draw. If any group winner votes are tied it will go on if either winner got more runner-up votes, and group winner votes for the 'loser' in that case will be re-counted as runner up votes for that beer.

There will doubtless be some debate about which beer has been chosen to represent each country: these are the best-selling local brews, so blame the peasantry in each.

    Group A

    Turkey - Efes
    Italy - Moretti
    Wales - Brains
    Switz - Feldschlossen

I read the list of beers before the disclaimer. If the ones I haven't had are anything like the ones I have (more than half of them) then it's not much of a selection. But in the spirit of the thing:

        Group A - Brain's
        Group B - Jupiler
        Group C - Stiegl
        Group D - Gambrinus
        Group E - Tyskie
        Group F - Erdinger

I've only included beers I've had. I can't find any runners-up. There's only one in the whole list I would actually drink out of choice.

They haven't qualified. You can only vote for Tyskie, Zlaty Bazant or Pripps in that group.

If this doesn't end up with Wales beating Germany in the final then you're all mad

With many of the reservations already expressed (since when has OTF ever been about mass popularity?)

Would we discount Carling as 'Canadian' even though it has only ever been brewed here as a brand exclusively for the English market? It's as English as Greg Rusedski.

England's late substitute would have to be John Smith's.

I don't think you get off the hook that easily

Though one way to improve the quality of the list would be to use the best selling beer that is locally owned

At least four or five are ultimately owned by Heineken so I wouldn't know where to start the research.

I would be surprised if more then a quarter are "domestic", and that includes Heineken itself

One needs a list of popular brands by country. I may take a shot tonight or tomorrow,

Is everybody who's saying "Erdinger" doing it because they're being paid to do it? Or is it like with new-born chicks, who think the first thing they see - hens, TV sets, bottles of Erdinger - is their mum?

Can someone do one based on wines? Though Wales may struggle.

Accurate information on wine sales by vineyard, variety and vintage is really hard to come by, and the best sellers are always awful

As do Erdinger, I've had Sagres and Kronenbourg and didn't feel I could vote for something I had never even seen.

They are almost sure to go out in the next round, though.

                                        You tart.

And, after that: Spanish wines think they're something they're not.

As Ursus says - some of us have drunk Kronenbourg and Sagres. In comparison Erdinger is positively tolerable.
