Is anyone doing a new Engerland song this year?

Surely no-one needs another reboot of Three Lions.

Are there young* bands out there now who give a shit about football now?

*The Lightning Seeds, Blur and Black Grape weren't exactly student bands in the 96-98 period

Three Lions and World in Motion aside, were any of the "credible" football songs really any good? When they don't come off they're even more excruciating than an old fashioned full squad schlager singalong.

The last time I saw Keith Allen he was playing a late middle aged rebel in Midsomer Murders.

The only credible national team song was the unofficial Scotland '96 one - Primal Scream, Irvine Welsh and On-U Sound System

Yes, pretty much anything by On-U Sound (and their side project the Barmy Army)

Three Lions is more durable than anyone could have imagined in 1996 and, with so many games being at Wembley, it can obviously be tweaked: 55 years of hurt...

The idea of official songs for tournaments feels really quaint now.

If Ant and Dec don't release "Come on lads - Do it for Prince Philip" then I for one will be most disappointed.

Surely an update of the Dad's Army theme tune, performed by a supergroup featuring Noel Gallagher, Right Said Fred and the bloke from Dollar?

It's only the media who seem to think England have any realistic chance at any tournament, so something self mocking would be appropriate.

I think they'd have to go a long way to beat Scotland and Del Amitri's self deprecating effort for France 98.

Not the woman from Bucks Fizz that's not Cheryl Baker?

Scotland's best World Cup song was clearly I Have a Dream from 1982. (Del Amitri's effort was just the standard maudlin fare that they'd been peddling for the previous decade.)

Plenty. Whether any can still afford to promote anything at this stage remains to be seen.

If John Barnes is free, here's a rap to go in the bit between the choruses (chorii?)

Phil and Her Maj were long time lovers
Now he's watching over above us
Now she's lonely and on her own
So Harry and the boys can bring football home
With Mason, and Raheem, and some Leicester players
Our Lads are gonna be Euro slayers
Kickin Krauts like Jean Van Damme
This one's for you - God bless you Ma'am

Most of Phil's relatives at his funeral were Krauts so steady on.

I feel that there was a specific period in British musical culture when the economics of making these records was viable, but that passed when media fragmented and the concept of No. 1 single was diluted by downloads and streaming. The mainstream TV and radio through which momentum for these songs used to be created, such as TOTP or 1990s Radio 1 culture, is either gone or much reduced in market share. This means that the Cowell-types who would oversee such projects can no longer control how the message gets passed along, given that singles used to be built up over 6 weeks of pre-release plugging not just 'dropped' like a Drake track. Hence they just wouldn't take the risk of making the investment, and nor obviously would the FA, BBC or whomever else had a stake.

3 Lions' gets back in the charts for a fortnight then disappears again because it's essentially nostalgia, like when Vera Lynn charted during the VE Day anniversaries.

Sorted that for you mate as Southgate won't be picking anyone from the KP, especially with Barnes and Justin injured. Would have though that good old Captain Tom could have been shoe-horned in there too.

I may have been awarding undue weight in dragging the whole genre down to England's 1998 dadrock x Spice Girls extravaganza (How Does It Feel To Be) On Top Of The World.
