No one would say that about "The Smithsonian", or "The Globe" (not the paper, the one where the playwrite did his thing)
Why shouldn't a ground be held in as much esteem?
"The" in front of it, it makes me think that no matter how many sponsor names for the stadium come along over the decades, it will always be known as "The..." locally.
No it just sounds wrong. The ones where they add a definite article and leave the "stadium" part off are the modern ones named after sponsors like the Ettihad, the Reebok and the Emirates. It's a modern football affectation and if someone being paid to report on football gets it wrong, they're not to be trusted.

It's either "Priestfield" or, if you're feeling very fancy "Priestfield Stadium". Never with a "the". Like Wembley. Or Buzzcocks.

It's a strange one, because Glanford was never really a place, it was the name of the Borough Council for the area surrounding Scunthorpe. The stadium name is almost a sponsorship, as it acknowledges the support in terms of planning and grants which Glanford Council gave for Scunny to relocate to their land just outside the town boundary. And also an insult to the Scunthorpe councillors who blocked attempts to stay in the town.
At the time, fans were keen on The New Showground, or Trent Valley something, but the name had stuck by the time Glanford was abolished in 1996.
And the stadium certainly passed the test of time... the time it took for Walsall to build a much better version.

Rotherham United - New York Stadium.

Farnborough's Cherrywood Road (officially the Rushmoor Community Stadium, or Paddy Power Park, but fuck that) is nicknamed the San Cherrio.

On the rugby front, you have "HQ" for Twickenham, but that's generally used by the West Stand car park picnic and braying set.

Harlequins' stadium, now called "The Twickenham Stoop" (insert vomiting smiley) was originally "The Stoop Memorial Ground" after one of the club legends. However, everyone always just calls it "The Stoop".

Le Chaudron - the cauldron - is the nickname for St. Etienne's Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Did you ever encounter the hotel/bar/restaurant?

                They are rather large fans

The bar looks vaguely familiar but my favourite Sainté themed bar was 'Les Poteaux Carrés' in Jean Jaurès. Great name.

They will never, ever, get over that.
