SalopChat and other clubs - Division 3 2018-19

TheLikesOfDoncaster will start the new season with a new manager after Darren Ferguson 'was left with no option' but to resign earlier this week. Which would suggest A. he didn't consider trying to be more effective on the same budget to be an option.... B. he has his eye on another job and will pop up somewhere else very soon.

Stuart McCall and current Doncaster Belles manager Neil Redfearn have the shortest odds of the usual suspects.

New dawn for Salop with the 'Age of Johns'. John Askey has taken the managerial reins - he got Macclesfield into the league last season and seems to be able to work on a tight budget. John Filan, former Socceroo, is his assistant.

2018-19 will see the debuting of safe standing in the South stand which may mean a few of the block 19 fans will decamp there. It's a distance from the away fans so the most aggressive tossers won't move.

      Hello again!

We don't have a manager but still have the bulk of last season's squad. Only one player remains from two seasons ago, and he probably won't get near the pitch barring injuries (Adam Davies - goalkeeper).

I'm actually quite confident, but this is based mostly on how bad Rotherham looked when they were relegated. If they can go straight back up then surely...

I would be disappointed with anything less than play-offs. But not shocked. Some kind of Cup run is a possible distraction.

We have a manager now... Grant McCann.

If our more reactionary fans are to be believed "this shows a complete lack of ambition from the board", where as in actuality we're a third tier side with a third tier budget who've just appointed a third tier manager. It is what it is.

            Hello again.
Daws and Dawson (Nick and Andy) were confirmed as permanent manager and assistant shortly after the playoff defeat, presumably as they were already there and relatively cheap.
Only new signing so far is forward Olufela Olomola, Southampton reserve who impressed on loan at Yeovil last year. A possible replacement for Hakeeb Adelakun, who is out of contract and moving on to Bristol City/Forest/Someone else. We'll at least get compensation as he's still a pup.

I'm looking forward to a season of mid-table mediocrity.

Plymouth, Portsmouth, Barnsley to duke it out at the top. Coventry to be contenders.

All the Shrewsbury players offered new contracts went elsewhere. Couple of people in, but not many. Underwhelming preseason friendlies (2 behind closed doors for some reason). The Facebook page has rarely seen so many meltdowns.

                No they didn't.

And the Facebook page is worse than B&A.

A signing! Stephen Humphrys has joined on a season long from Fulham. Previous loan spells for Shrews and Rochdale, for whom he scored at Wembley v Spurs in the cup.
He looks a big unit, so probably not signed for finesse.

Coventry pinched a couple of them. Brown and Ogogo. They look like decent signings amid a promising summer of acquisitions... although we also lost our leading goalscorer from last year. He has buggered off to Reading.

Oh, and Tom Bayliss has been selected for the England U20s at the European Championships, which starts tomorrow. Some going for a player whose profesional career comprises a single season in League 2.

If the former stays fit and the latter stays fit, and on the pitch, then yes.

Enjoy Amadi-Holloway. Manages about one or two good games a season, and keeps looking like he could be a really good player.

But isn't. Doesn't score, and for a big lad never quite fills the target man role.

There are some Latics fans over the moon we got a nominal fee for him. Harsh, but not entirely unfair.

Yeah. It seems an odd signing.

Shrewsbury seem to be following a 'diamonds in the dirt' strategy. But they might just end up with dirt.

I mean, it's possible you'll uncover a gem in him. He's not a player who winds fans up by being lazy or mouthy. But we weren't the first club to try and fail at working out what he could be good at.

Gillead is a good signing, he went off the boil a bit in the 2nd half of last season, but then so did everyone else

Just following the same policy that Hurst started. It's all a punt.

But, I'd rather this way than the Bury way for example.

Lyle Taylor carries on as he left off for Wimbledon, notching a penalty for Charlton against Sunderland.

Maybe doing slightly better, he actually missed almost half his penalties for Wimbledon.

Are Wimbledon going to do OK or is this is a step up too quickly?

This is their third straight season in League One.

Fair point. I thought they and Franchise had swapped divisions at the same time.

Salop seem to have reverted to the mean with a 0-1 home defeat with two shots onto the bar and a goal line clearance all Shrewsbury got for their troubles. Not seen any highlights but the official* club Twitter said it was end to end stuff.

It's a massive rebuild job with two players still likely to leave, so the first few games were bound to be rocky.

*they've rebranded to "Shrewsbury Town Official" for some reason.

It's going to be a crazy roller-coaster ride to lower mid-table mediocrity.

None of this grind it out nonsense, it's going to be end to end stuff. Just what you need if you're going to be a mid-table team.

                                                  Can't wait.
