Bailey Peacock Farrell sounds like a GB Rugby League back row from the early 2000s.

Frank Ribéry at the 2006 WC. Was only included in the WC squad as an afterthought sort of thing, first capped on 27th May 2006 in a friendly vs Mexico. He did well in the other 2 friendlies leading to the Cup finals and by the time the WC kicked off he was a first-choice starter. He then turned out to be instrumental in France reaching the final.

Was one of the standout performers vs Spain in the round of 16 (3-1 –scored the first goal), then shone both vs Brazil in the quarters and Portugal in the semis.

I can’t remember how he played in the final vs Italy, it's all a big blur, the vague memories I have of that game are obscured by Zidane’s coup de sang – rush of blood (to the head), moment of madness.

At the start of Mexico 86, Hately,Wilkins and Robson were first teamers but a combination of being useless, red card and injury respectively gave Beardsley,Reid and Hodge a chance to stake their claim and in the latter's case, get his hands on one of the most valuable pieces of football memorabilia around

Indeed, but to cut the guy the tiniest bit of slack, the 2014 omission was admittedly through injury.

So 'pivotal' that he wasn't given even a second of pitch time - which could've made some difference in the q/f with Portugal. Appalling waste of a place from Sven. (Rather amusingly, Walcott then wasn't selected for the next tournament...)
Or the one after that or the one after that.

Geoff Hurst - didn't play in any of the group games in 1966 and only came into the side when Greaves got injured.

Wasn't Toto Schillachi a late call-up, or at least a marginal figure, in Italy's 1990 squad?

In the 1950 sort-of-final, Ruben Moran made his debut for Uruguay.

Was discussing the relevance of players included in tournament squads basically to make up numbers, and how often such players have, though injuries to other players, or tactical changes or whatever, actually ended up being used to great effect.

Any examples of players included in tournament squads basically to make up numbers that have, though injuries to other players, or tactical changes or whatever, actually ended up being used to great effect?
