    Carlos Alberto Torres

Carlos Alberto Torres, Brazil's 1970 World Cup captain and scorer of THAT goal has died from a heart-attack, aged 72.

I still get goosebumps watching it.

        Awful news.

He also was an integral part of the New York Cosmos' original galacticos, and was notable for taking that whole adventure rather more seriously on the field than his more well-known Brazilian teammate.

        RIP

It's come as a real shock here. He was commentating as usual on SporTV on Sunday.

RIP, indeed. There's never been better than that final line-up of 1970 - and that World Cup goal was clearly the best of all time, particularly if one takes into consideration the status of the match, as well as the overall team play and build-up.

I didn't know much about football until that tournament. In my naivety, I assumed that the game would always be this beautiful.

It took a special goal to overshadow Gerson's in that final, but the fourth certainly did it. And it is always a pleasure to hear Hugh Johns commentary again, a far, far superior commentator to Wolstenholme.

It shouldn't be forgotten in the final that it was still 1-1 up until the 66th minute. It was only after Gerson's scorcher that Brazil utterly dominated. Italy also went into the final exhausted on the back of the titanic extra time semi-final against West Germany.

That is not to take away from Brazil 70 and Carlos Alberto's goal. In the annals of hammered goals, it will always be at the top. Every single time I see it I still hear Bam!! in my head.

I couldn't find a video of his final speech after the Cosmos 3:3 Flamengo Retirement Match (in which he played one half for Flamengo, then one for the Cosmos,) but he had one of my favorite quotes of all-time. It was something along the lines of "I hate to say goodbye, I'd rather say 'see you later.'"

The next 3 are highlights from his retirement match or Cosmos highlights:
