Which managers will star in the new season?

Will Mourinho repair his damaged reputation? Will Guardiola live up to expectations? Will Wenger do anything other than finish in the CL places? Will Klopp flop, or win a Cup? Can Ranieri get Leicester fighting on two fronts?

    Who knows?

But surely the more interesting question is not which managers will star in the Premier League, but who will take The OTF League on Xpert Eleven by storm?

Xpert Eleven is an online football manager game. You are given a team with a squad of players and you compete in a league with other OTFers, some are hardcore regulars, and some are occasional posters and some are just lurkers who don't really post on here at all and just enjoy the game. We don't mind really - everyone's welcome.

Join the game, bring your brand new squad of rough diamonds (and the just plain rough) into virtual existence, and hone their skills.

Tell them to go out all guns blazing, lump it long, or park the bus.

Throw the kids into matches where you couldn't give a hoot about the result, try to keep them developing in ability as they get older, and bring new youths in to bolster your squad (or to sell them on).

Scout the opposition. Pick your formation and set up your team, give them their tactics before the game - and then leave the business of getting the win on the virtual pitch down to them.

Play the transfer market (every day, if your name is Clive), tweak your squad, earn some cash, put out pithy press releases, and mess about with your kits and squad numbers.

It doesn't take a lot of time either. A couple of minutes a day will usually do just to check updates and set your team, though you may spend a bit more than that on the site when you want to find a new player or write a press release (which can earn you extra cash) for example. The game is easy to play, and the site is simple to navigate.

Also we are a welcoming bunch and are happy to help with any questions that might arise as you get used to the game play. Just try it for a season and see how you go, we won't mind if you decide that it isn't for you, though you might find it hopelessly addictive and end up running another league like I and others have.

It doesn't have to cost you anything. The game is free to join, but you have the option of purchasing VIP membership if you want to take advantage of extra gizmos like stats and custom kits, or increase your team portfolio.

And joining is easy too. Here is the invite link for the OTF Xpert Eleven League. Just click on it, enter your details and the OTF League admin Etienne will set you up.

I was just thinking I might have to sort this over the next couple of days, so thanks for setting this up, Kev.
Have a go, people, it's open to all. Regular posters or occasional lurkers, you are all welcome to join.

Which managers will star in the new season?

But just like the Premier League, the OTF League will see a new champion at the end of the current season. With three games left to play the top of the table looks like this:

      Code:
                     GP W D L GF-GA P
      Hideous Towns 21 15 4 2 34-10 49
      Vita Mortis 21 13 3 5 34-15 42
      Games remaining:

      Thursday
      Saltney Drawers - Hideous Towns
Vita Mortis - AFC Csiki Monkeys

      Monday
Vita Mortis - Great Northern Railway
      Hideous Towns - Eriskay Expression

      Thursday week
Great Ouse Town - Vita Mortis
      Hideous Towns - Steaua Bridge

Hot Orange is looking to cap off a title winning season with his Hideous Towns side. They are in their 14th season in the OTF league, having joined in May 2013, and were promoted to the top flight for the first time last season and finished a couple of places above the relegation zone. This season they have been cruising and have led the table since before the halfway point of the season.

Chasing them, but now hoping against hope, are Various Artist's (Velvet Android) Vita Mortis. They had a slow start to the season but have been rising up the table since the halfway stage. Like Hideous Towns, they have not won the league before, and joined later in 2013. Vita Mortis have shown a lot of title-winning potential in recent seasons, with finishes of 3rd and 4th in the last two. Second place, if they hold on to it, would be another mark of progress.

In case this is all sounding a bit familiar, Vita Mortis finish their season with a trip to local rivals Great Ouse Town (that's me).

As well as being local rivals, Great Ouse Town play in blue, are recent champions themselves, and we have something of a reputation for dirty play.

One can only hope that, if the leaders are uncatchable by then, that Vita Mortis don't end up losing their discipline spectacularly in the face of Ouse's dark arts.

Just a reminder of the sign up link - come on and give it a go!

We think we have 45 managers ready and raring to go for the new season and we can happily absorb some more (in fact it will probably make the divisions divide up better if we have some new blood).

There are also some now-managerless established teams which will be terminated at the end of the season, if you would rather come riding in to rescue a giant about to go to the wall, including the OTF League's third most successful club, Fourth Lanark.

Hah, you smuggled this thread in successfully under my radar Kev, nice one. Since the antepenultimate round of matches was played half an hour ago, Hideous Towns may well have been crowned with their first league title by now, and confirming their usurpation of my lot as not only the heaviest-hitting top flight arrivistes but also regaining from us the position of number one virtual side in Norfolk to boot, seeing how your lot just down the river are over the county boundary in Cambridgeshire. Strange irony that we've emerged from the pack rather by accident in the latter stages of the campaign as the only side capable of stopping them, come the final fortnight, though we've looked anything but contenders until this last week.
Strange irony too about Ouse potentially playing 'Chelsea' to our 'Spurs' in this scrap, but since Hideous are local to both of us too that makes them more like Arsenal than Leicester in this scenario...

Anyway, yes, we ideally need a Mourinho figure to rescue the suddenly rudderless 'Manchester United' that is Gawpus' former charges Fourth Lanark. Or even a Van Gaal; Gawpus being their Ferguson not their Moyes I hasten to add.
Actually, Dandy Town are the Manchester United in this world aren't they, with Amwythig Dragons as its Liverpool, more or less, so does that make Fourth the Man City, by a process of elimination? Or are so many of the Dragons' titles so long ago now they count more as its Huddersfield Town?

Regardless, if anyone alternatively wants to start from the fourth tier with an all-new team, then you're all equally welcome to come along and be the Accrington Stanley, Barnet, Crewe, Doncaster, Exeter or indeed Yeovil Town of the OTF League, attempting to gatecrash the lowest division with a ramshackle bunch of unproven youths, could've-beens and never-weres, and transforming your collection of journeymen into future legends of the game to rival the likes of famed hatchetmen Arda Karagöl and Jim Ryder, deadly Dandies hitman "Double D" Derick Durkan or Ouse's great ginger lounge lizard Basil Sheen.

Nieuwegein Kneebiters are a less successful Bayer Leverkusen. Almost won the title once, ages ago.

Excellent metaphor-extension, Wouter. Vita Mortis' desire is to at least end up as this league's Deportivo La Coruńa.

Edit: Truly, such vaulting ambition is the way with which I'd have hoped to reach 4000 posts. Woo-hoo.

I had Fourth Lanark as Arsenal myself, since their title battles with our Man U (Dandy Town) represent a definite era in themselves.

Which managers will star in the new season?

Yes, sorry Kev, you're quite right there that this is the clearest parallel for Fourth.

Only time will tell – both in what we laughingly still call 'the real world' and in the game – whether Hideous prove to be our new Man City instead then, minus a fair wodge of petrodollars to be fair, or stay as our new Leicester...whatever that may turn out to mean, let's wait nine months or so shall we?

It should be noted that Fourth Lanark are not the only former great threatened with extinction due to their manager leaving, merely perhaps the biggest name with four recent league titles under their belts – and seeing them following Third Lanark into oblivion would be pretty rough to stomach. (Heaven knows what happened to First and Second Lanark.) We also have Greenguard FC, twice former league champions (when they were known as AFC Purgatory) a good while back, still hovering on the fringes of the big time since and hence I suppose the Everton of this league. Then too there's Hornville, one of only three remaining league founder members from nine years and 41 seasons ago, who won it once way way back in Season 7 but have long since fallen on harder times, making them, oh I don't know, the Ipswich Town of this setting, in need of their Bobby Robson or at least George Burley figure to lead them to fresh pastures of greatness.

New potential Scunthorpes, Rotherhams, Colchesters, Rochdales, etc. under latter-day Dario Gradis, Neil Warnocks and so forth are also more than welcome, of course.

Last game of the current season, so the perfect time for any more new managers wanting to give it a go.
