    Tot ziens tukkers: Eredivisie 2016-2017

    Interesting. Thanks for that, Geoff.

Like most other people, I'm baffled by parts of Chelsea's loan policy (I would have expected Solanke to stay in Arnhem for at least one more season but he's back at the Bridge accruing virtually zero playing time), but I've got my fingers crossed the Baker gets a chance at some point in the near future.

Any idea how they address Vitesse and other clubs that have loan players from English clubs?

I’m not entirely sure ursus. I would suggest that as Vitesse are not exactly swimming in money, Baker’s wages are cabled from Stamford Bridge in their entirety.

Kevin Blom, the world’s worst referee, chalked up a notable first last night at the PEC Zwolle-FC Utrecht beker tie- the first video referee to be bundled into a police wagon under the protection of riot police after a match due to an abysmal decision.

The KNVB have implemented video referees for this season’s beker tournament. With the tie 1-1 and in extra time, referee Bjorn Kuipers pointed to the spot after Richairo Zivkovic bundled himself to the ground after a Dirk Marcellis “challenge”. Despite it never being a penalty in a month of Sunday’s, Blom confirmed it as such on video evidence. As a result, PEC fans waited after the match to robustly explain why Blom was wrong.

Zivkovic later said that “I looked for his leg, it was a gift”. Blom- not only the world’s worst on the pitch, now the world’s worst off it. Gefeliciteerd Kevin.

Missed this response, but if the 0.27 figure in the chart includes the full amount paid to the Chelsea loanees, the difference with the other leagues is even more striking.

Ajax have just been dumped out of the beker by second division SC Cambuur. And further hypocrisy in the KNVB fining Koninglijke HFC for having a booze based sponsor on their shirt in an earlier round (see previous page)- this season's beker is co-sponsored by Apple Bandit Cider, Heineken's new cider which features prominently on the advertising hoardings and behind interviewees.

It is a truth, universally acknowledged that a 1960’s Dutchman in possession of an extraordinary footballing talent, must be in want of a feud- and so it proved with Piet Keizer.

Keizer’s international record, 34 caps and 11 goals with 12 years between his first and last cap was modest due to falling out with the KNVB in the late 1960’s and his exceptionally difficult relationship with club and latterly bondscoach Rinus Michels. The feud with the KNVB dated from a friendly against Yugoslavia in November 1967. After being continually fouled by right back Dragan Holcer from kick off, Keizer eventually retaliated by booting Holcer in the air in the 18th minute. Referee Kurt Tschenscher unleashed the red and as a result the KNVB not only suspended Keizer from Oranje but also suspended him for four weeks from playing for his club.

So disgusted by the KNVB’s actions, Keizer did not make himself available for national selection for three years. By the time 1974 had come around, Keizer had already irrevocably fallen out with club manager Rinus Michels. The two refused to speak with each other and one incident during an Ajax training match in which Michels played, Keizer went in so hard on Michels that Michels could not walk for a month. Because the two did not speak, Michels refused to speak with Keizer about it. Keizer was so vital to Ajax that despite a mutual loathing lasting a number of years, Michels never hesitated in selecting him.

When Keizer found out about Michels departure to Barcelona in 1971 he was so elated that he said he danced on a table at the news despite carrying a serious foot injury. In 1974, Michels only played Keizer once (the 0-0 draw against Sweden) and even when Rob Rensenbrink went off injured in the 46th minute of the final and with Oranje 2-1 down, Michels preferred to bring on a young Rene van der Kerkhof rather than the defence unlocking Keizer.

Keizer’s final act of pique was abruptly ending his career after a falling out with Ajax coach Hans Kraay Sr, his last game being on the 13th October 1974 in a 2-1 away win to FC Amsterdam. He retired aged 31.

Paradoxically despite having no illusions about his own abilities or opinions, he always got on famously with Johan Cruijff and never seemed to have any issue playing in Cruijff’s shadow. Cruijff never appeared to show Keizer any ill will either after the infamous 1973 player’s vote which resulted in Keizer becoming Ajax captain and Cruyff heading to Schiphol and Barcelona.

Keizer was also reticent about his famous “scissors” movement (schaarbeweging) which done for many a defender and which many claimed was invented by Keizer. Keizer never took credit for inventing it, always giving the credit to scissoring predecessors Abe Lenstra and before him 1930’s star Law Adam. There is a theory that the Dutch developed the schaarbeweging due to the country’s predilection for speed skating.

Keizer was a difficult figure who always followed his own path both on the pitch and off it, a player of outstanding qualities whose personality fitted totaalvoetbal perfectly. A cursory glance of youtube will show Keizer more often than not picking up the ball extremely deep and either beating the right back, zooming down the wing and putting in a perfect cross or picking the ball up deep and racing through the central defence, invariably scoring. He seemed at ease anywhere on the attacking half of the pitch.

Ajax will officially observe a minute’s silence before tomorrow’s home fixture against Sparta and you can be assured that the Ajacieden are frantically at work as we speak, putting together what will be an impressive and entirely fitting epitaph for the club's greatest ever linksbuiten.

Henk Sprenger, the cartoonist who drew the domestically famous Kick Wilstra series, drew a number of football lessons in association with Piet Keizer. They appeared in the early 1970's in Het Parool newspaper. In 1973, Grundig television (no doubt with an eye on that season's European Cup Final in which Ajax would invariably qualify for) collected them for a 36 page special Leer het van Piet Keizer (Learn it with Piet Keizer).

The result is a rather wonderful 36 page special in which Keizer reveals the secrets of his success and explains how to replicate them, everything from the perfect free kick to his famous schaarbeweging. If I do find any more of the strip, I will post it.

Very good of team mate Wim Suurbier to be the victim of Keizer's scissors.

Well this is different. Next season's Eredivisie match ball has been designed by an, erm, tattoo artist. Leading tattoo artist Henk Schiffmaker has turned his attention away from permanently inking footballers arms, necks, chests and arses with overblown shit towards footballs:

It has more than a passing resemblance to the 1986 Azteca, but fair play to the Eredivisie for commissioning a design from unusual quarters.

And this is it, this is the weekend that the wheels fall off the Feyenoord bandwagon. It has to at some stage hasn't it? It's gone on too long this season, a joke's a joke and it's time this nonsense that Feyenoord can somehow win the Eredivisie should be put to bed. This is what is going to happen. Feyenoord are 5 points clear of Ajax and are away to bottom placed ADO on Sunday. Feyenoord's only defeat this season came away to then bottom placed Go Ahead Eagles. Feyenoord will lose to ADO, Ajax will do what Ajax does domestically and win against Vitesse. Feyenoord play PSV next week, and Amsterdam will overhaul Rotterdam.

                            Put a monkey on it.

And speaking of Rotterdam, it looks very likely that there is a concerted campaign by fan groups to pack the Eredivisie's 60th anniversaryHet Gouden Elftal (The Golden 11) full of players from one of the city's clubs. And I am not talking about Sparta or Excelsior.

We are currently in the left back position which Giovanni van Bronckhorst is winning by an enormous percentage (77% at the moment) even though he is up against Frank de Boer and Ruud Krol. Already voted is goalkeeper, right back and central defenders. Get ready to raise those eyebrows.

Goalkeeper- Eddie Peters Graafland who beat Jan van Beveren, Hans van Breukelen, Jan Jongbloed and Edwin van der Saar.

Right back- Ben Wijnstekers who beat Wim Suurbier, Berry van Aerle, Eric Gerets and Michael Reizeger.

1st Central defender- Rinus Israël who beat Ronald Koeman, Danny Blind, Velibor Vasovic and Epi Drost.

2nd Central defender- Frank Rijkaard. Rijkaard only won his place not because he was any good but because no Feyenoord player was on the shortlist for this position. Rijkaard was up against Jaap Stam, Barry Hulshoff, Ronald Spelbos and Alex.

Watch in awe over the coming weeks as Michael Mols beats Cruijff into a distant second whilst Willy Carbo gains 98% to Willy van der Kuilen's 2%.

With the exception of Israël, HMMMMMM........Voting is open to all not just Feyenoord fans, so if you fancy adding your voice, fire away.

A few weeks old but worth discussing.

Some of the smarter players are already taking onboard one of the proposed solutions: don't go abroad so early. I'm sure that's one of the reasons why Klaassen is still at Ajax, that along with them being able to make it relatively worth his while.

Feyenoord have won and in the most dramatic of circumstances. A header from Feyenoord's Jan Arie van der Heijden was smothered by Jeroen Zoet in goal when the goal decision app on referee Bas Nijhuis's watch buzzed:

Ajax decide not to take advantage, and merely draw at Groningen. So Feyenoord still top the league by four points with nine games to go. PSV are third, trailing by four more points.

Having spent 25,317 minutes and 303 games in the Eredivisie without a goal to his name, Kruiswijk headed his first career goal in on the 40th minute of the match- his first goal in his 16th season as a professional, 304th Eredivisie appearance and 25,318th minutes of play. In January he had surpassed the previous Eredivisie no goals record holder John Veldman.

PEC most certainly did, Eagles fans, PEC most certainly did.

Two weeks to the biggest fixture of this season- Ajax-Feyenoord in the ArenA. Ajax dropped 2 crucial points in the away 1-1 draw with Excelsior whilst Feyenoord again dug out a victory whilst being up against it for significant parts of the game, winning 2-1 away to Heerenveen.

Feyenoord have a relatively easy run in after the Ajax game, so it is win or bust for Ajax. Still too early to call it for Feyenoord but if they do win the schaal it will be a remarkable achievement for van Bronckhorst and the youth policy of Feyenoord and should warrant much analysis.

Speaking of the ArenA, the Cruijff family have "a problem" with the club and gemeente Amsterdam over the prospective new name of the stadium. Son Jordi did not go into much detail as to the beef other than the club and council are dragging their heels but as we are dealing here with family Cruijff, call me cynical if there is not other things going on.....
