Are you the next Eddie Howe?

Think you've got what it takes to be a football manager like new blue-eyed darling of the press Eddie Howe? Do you reckon you could take a team floundering about at the bottom of the league and rise through the divisions before reaching your eventual goal of top flight football and pitting your wits against some of the best managers in the league? Well this is your chance to prove it by joining the OTF League on Xpert Eleven.
Want to know more? Xpert Eleven is an online football manager game. You are given a team with a squad of players and you compete in a league with other OTFers, some are hardcore regulars, and some are occasional posters and some are just lurkers who don't really post on here at all and just enjoy the game. We don't mind really.
Just like in real football, you try to pick a team to beat your opponent whilst trying to nurture young talent and, with some training, squad alterations and accumulation of wealth, grow your squad of players into a successful winning team. You play in a league twice a week, and you get to choose the formation and style of play that you think best suits your team, and can buy and sell players in the transfer market and bring in new youth prospects.
It doesn't take a lot of time either. A couple of minutes a day will usually do just to check updates and set you team, though you may spend a bit more than that on the site if you want to find a new player or write a press release (which can earn you extra cash).
The game is easy to play, and the site is very simple to navigate. Also we are a welcoming bunch and are happy to help with any questions that might arise as you get used to the game play. Just try it for a season and see how you go, we won't mind if you decide that it isn't for you. Alternatively you could become hopelessly addicted and end up running a massive private league like I have.
It doesn't have to cost you anything. The game is free to join, but you have the option of purchasing VIP membership if you want to take advantage of extra gizmos or increase your team portfolio.
And joining is easy too. This is the league invite link. Just click on it, enter your details and the OTF League admin Etienne will set you up.

Little tip - try to avoid buggering off to another club up the other end of the country and letting Lee Bradbury take over. It really doesn't help.

As a[strike]n addict[/strike] participant, I can confirm that this game, just like its tagline suggests, is "easy to learn, hard to master".

Approximately 40 OTFers can't be wrong.

Are you the next Eddie Howe?

You don't have to be online when the games are 'taking place' (1700 Monday and Friday).

It works more like play-by-mail - you set up those tactics screens in advance of each game, trying to guess what your opponent will do, and then watch it all pan out at your convenience afterwards.

Go on, give it a go.

Didn't realise you used the old-school line up/tactics selection screens Kev.

ad hoc makes a good point there - the tactics and lineup pages will look different for a new player from the above unless they change it in their options.

Haha, it just happens to be the most recent match for the team where I least minded giving away information to the rest of you lot!

However, yes, GG Owls have had three defeats on the spin without scoring and we are now staring relegation in the face again. Ho hum.

Here's the new style tactics screen ad hoc referred to. Click to embiggen.

.. and you can download the app to watch the play unfold as your first-year squad travels to one of the top clubs and earns themselves a 2-2 draw.

But wait a minute. With no time on the clock the cunting referee awards a penalty to the home side, and they score. No time for a restart, and you lose 3-2.

The manager gets fined for off-camera comments made about the referee, but in a great show of appreciation, the funds are crowd-sourced by the club's supporters.

                                    Just like in real football.

In answer to the question posed in the thread title, no I'm not.

This is because I don't look like I should be wearing a Boden gilet, pushing a child around an urbane deli in a hideously expensive buggy, whilst my glamorous wife - who is back down to a size eight mere days after giving birth - buys the foccaccia and olives.

Nice idea using screenshots Kev. I'm actually tempted to try the "new" tactics screen having seen that graphic. We are late adopters at Berkshire Swine.

You forgot the shot called "check to see that your team is still languishing in mid-table obscurity":

I'm still with the old tactics screen. Had completely forgotten there was a new one.

Anyway, a message to anyone thinking of joining, especially lurkers who have never posted on here. WSC is a great place to be on the internet but many have also said it's quite intimidating to make the jump from lurking to posting.

The behemoth that is the Xperteleven thread would be a great place to gently dip your toe into WSC waters. Everyone is ridiculously supportive and friendly and it's not all about the football. There have been ongoing discussions on mathematical equations, species of swine, Romanian pronunciation dilemmas to name but a few. In essence, the thread is a microcosm of what is so great about the WSC message board.

I must applaud Jon's contribution there — it's so true, all human life is there in the main X11 thread. I'd been on OTF for over two years and posted probably no more than 50 times before I finally took notice of one of these cryptic recruitment threads, and I'm very glad I did, having found a community-within-a-community of great people who will bend over backwards to help out the newcomer. Well, some of them will, anyway.
Don't be put off by the more esoteric in-game stuff you might find us banging on about, because it's very easy to dip your toe in the waters and then find yourself willingly slipping in up to your neck as the weeks and months go by. There's all sorts of perks, should you desire: getting into ongoing friendly rivalries, with other OTFers in particular; customising your teams to your own specifications; running multiple clubs in different leagues with different formats; gaining the ability to forget about the tiresome predictablity and heartache of real-life football because, sod the Premier League, you're in with a chance of sneaking promotion from OTF Division 3.

Come on, come and join us all.
