    Cult heroes

Kowalski linked to a site over on the semi-detached from reality thread where you can print up a t-shirt with your three cult heroes on. Much in the style of the Beatles t-shirts you can get, and the Slayer one that Carcass printed up, they look a bit like this:

So, good burghers of OTF, who would you have on yours? And, more importantly, why?

Right, I'd have to go for:

    Minter &
    Clark &
    Cockram

Billy Minter was six decades before my time, but 356 goals in 362 matches isn't a bad return. Steve Clark I do remember - 322 goals in 488 matches between 1991 and 2000 (including 56 in the 1994/95 season). Allan Cockram was a midfielder who had two reasonably lengthy spells at the club as a player and one as manager, when he had an insanely attacking team that scored 96 goals and concede 81 in one season.

Depends what you mean by cult heroes. If it's great players past & present, then probably Andy Ritchie and Roger Palmer for their goalscoring records over long careers at Boundary Park, and possibly Tricky Ricky Holden for being one of the most entertaining players around (I'm not really old enough to remember Alan Groves, a 1970s crowd-pleaser who died tragically young).

If it's a little more unpredictable, I'd go for more recent players like Gary Kelly (the goalkeeper), David Eyres, Paul Warne and John Sheridan, or relatively unsung heroes like Nick Henry, Richard Jobson and Gunnar Halle.

We'd have Simon Yeo, Gareth Ainsworth and 'Hoof' Grant Brown.

Yeo is the former soldier and postman who couldn't hit a barn door from October till April during the 2002/2003 season but scored the crucial equaliser on the last day that got us into the play-offs and then scored 3 goals over two-legs against Scunny (all after coming on as sub). Sadly he couldn't do anything to stop us getting tonked by Bournemouth at Cardiff, but we were just glad to be there, after going into administration a year before.
In the season when we got to Cardiff again, he scored 23 goals and although he bitched about the club when he left, he'll be fondly remembered.

Ainsworth is probably the best player i've seen in a red & white shirt. Total 100% commitment, really nice guy too and as part of John Beck's 'Team Lincoln' he managed to score 24 goals from right wing before we sold him to Port Vale. Genuinely nice bloke who helped us out when we needed the money by signing a few shirts and getting them sold, and when a few Lincoln mates of mine went to see his band play in Hammersmith he was happy to talk and pose for pics.

Grant Brown, or 'Hoof' played over 400 times for City and tops our football league appearances table. He's now our youth team coach, and this season has acted as caretaker manager and acting first team coach alongside Iffy whilst Peter Jackson recovers.

well, the third one is up for grabs. Given that the first two are drawn from either end of the Cult Hero stock - i.e. brilliant goal-getter and huge-hearted, big-spirited plodder - who knows? Zamora? Foster? Case? Lawrenson? Personally, I'd always want to pick John Byrne, because he was the white, Irish, Third Division Pelé.

                    So,
                    Crumplin &
                    Ward &
                    Byrne.

                    Stained with tears.
