His goals-per-game ratio at Werder was better than for Germany.

Lukas Podolski is more of a candidate than Klose.

Couple of Costa Ricans, Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell- although in Campbell's case it's more an assumption of Arsene Wenger that he won't do it in the premier league, rather than a proposition that's been tested.

Wandering off topic somewhat, someone I know did a safety inspection at Liverpool's training facility somewhere around 2005. Left alone in the locker room, they did what most of us would do and peeked in a couple of the players' lockers. Kewell... some boots and kit; Gerrard.... photos of the kids and, ooh, a couple of medals; Baros... WTF?? It's just full of photos of himself!!

Salvatore Schillaci. Top scorer at Italia 90. Hardky had a hugely distinguished club career prior to the tournament. Not a huge amount afterwards...

The explanation I heard was woman-related (as per) - his childhood sweetheart from Palermo couldn't handle moving away to the big city, especially after Toto became a superstar. Ah, we've all been there.

A variant on the 'David Unsworth' defence.

Messina isn't exactly near palermo though. It's more likely that schillachi was a decent player, who had the 12 months of his life in the lead up to the tournament and struggled to maintain anything like that form again. He seemed to pick up a lot of injuries after the tournament. He had never played top flight football until he was nearly 25, and he was in japan by 30.

Emile Heskey. Performed consistently, if not brilliantly, for England over many years, helping Rooney and Owen's game, while getting worse and worse at club level.
