    Rogin's occasional Friday night quiz

Tonight it's about domestic Cup doubles, i.e. winning the League Cup or its equivalent and the FA Cup in the same season, in countries that have both.

    1. Which are the English clubs to have achieved this feat?

    2. Which are the Scottish clubs to have achieved this feat?

    3. Which European league has more different clubs to have achieved this feat than those from England and Scotland put together?

I know Portugal has a league cup equivalent, as well as France. Germany had a pre-season cup competition that had the top teams from the previous season and the previous season's cup winners, but I don't know if that counts.

Pokal is German for cup. The German Cup is the DFB Pokal. The former league cup competition was the DFB Ligapokal.

I'd say that the answer to no. 3 would be the Republic of Ireland then considering that the Welsh League Cup only began in 1992 at a time when the Welsh Cup still had teams from the English pyramid in it.

Well done to PPV for not going any further, for fear of the firestorm.

But yes, the Republic of Ireland currently has no fewer than 8 league clubs who've done their domestic cup double on at least one occasion:

Shamrock Rovers, Derry City, Bohemians, Waterford, Dundalk, Shelbourne, Longford and Sligo. Two more actually did it in the past, but are now defunct.

Quite a few clubs have done it here, enough that I'd have to look it up. I think Derry, Longford, Dundalk, Sligo and Cork all have, and I'd guess most of the Dublin clubs have at some point as well. It helps that we've had a league cup for sometime, but it became almost an annual thing for a while that the same team would take home both cups.
In Scotland, has anyone apart from the old firm and Aberdeen done it?

Just seen Rogin's post now... If you're going to not count cork as they are defunct, you might have to subtract rangers from Scotland's total (runs for cover).
Without looking it up, I'm sure St. Pats must have done a slightly less glorious double of being runners up in both cups once or twice.

Not that I can think of. The Dons have done it twice, 85/86 and 89/90. I assume Celtic and Rangers have done it heaps of times.

Pah, if I'd seen this question earlier, I'd have definitely gone for Ireland. There's been a trend over the last 15 years or so of teams becoming cup specialists.

Off the top of my head, I recall:
Derry's cup double being part of the domestic treble in 1987/88 (last time it was achieved)
Sligo Rovers in 1993/94, when they were a second-tier side. But they also won their division so it was a treble, of sorts.
Shelbourne in 1995/96, where they beat Sligo Rovers side managed by Steve Cotterill on penalties in the League Cup Final, and cost St Pats and Brian Kerr the double by winning the FAI Cup Final.
Longford Town in 2004 and Sligo Rovers in 2010, both of whom were very close to doing successive cup doubles - Longford Town won the FAI Cup in 2003 & 2004, lost the League Cup Final in 2003 (missing a last minute penalty), but winning it in 2004, and Sligo Rovers won the League Cup in 2009 & 2010, were leading 1-0 (through the prolific Chesterfield striker Eoin Doyle) but conceded twice in the last ten minutes of the 2009 FAI Cup Final before winning it in 2010. Paul Cook always played his strongest team in the cup competitions, when others didn't, it should be noted.

Edit: Derry City did the cup double in 2006, and only lost out on the title and treble to Shelbourne on the last day of the season. That was the season they had a great run in Europe, knocking out Gothenburg & Gretna, before giving PSG a decent couple of games. It caught up with them by the end of the season, though.
