Return of the Kun - weekend football

That offside decision against Vertonghen was so bad, one can only assume the assistant was focussed on the need for Sunderland to have two outfield defenders goal-side, as the keeper was up the other end of the pitch, and in doing-so he completely forgot about judging what half of the pitch the attackers were in. Because, no exaggeration, Vertonghen was about 6-7 yards inside his own half when the pass was made.

That's ten points now this season that Spurs have won from the 88th minute onwards. That also means that today's 88th minute winner was only Spurs fifth latest winning goal. Unlike the other four, today's was probably deserved.

Spurs last eight league wins have been by the following scores: 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 5-3, 2-1. None of those 2-1's saw Spurs going 2-0 up. And people have the temeririty to label Spurs 'unpredictable'.

Maybe the ref's assistant had some money on that result?

One of the gratifying aspects of this rather odd season at The Lane has been our boys' willingness to work for the full 90 minutes. Which of course has been rewarded several times with these late winners

A truly terrible decision in the Spurs game. As was the penalty not awarded against Soton in the closing minutes for a very obvious and deliberate handball in the game against Newcastle.

Whenever the programme was no longer edited by a Liverpool fan. Even Lineker was forced to fess up, it was that shit.

Saint & Greavesie ran a Goal of the Season in 1988/89. There was some crackers in it - Robert Fleck's volley away to Millwall, and two brilliant solo runs by Paul Ince for West Ham at Villa Park and Alan McInally for Villa. ITV had coverage of the league back then, and BBC had the cup. No surprise that the BBC's chosen winners back then were in FA Cup. Also no surprise that they were Liverpool goals, as the BBC had a serious horn for Liverpool back then.

the goal tonight was from the 1989 FA cup final It's the First goal in this clip; and while it's definitely not the best goal of the game, it's also arguably not even the best goal that liverpool scored in that game.

by contrast this is the Goal of the Month for december 2006. A compilation so good that I could remember nearly all of the goals, nearly a decade laterSix or seven of these would beat every goal of the season that MOTD has shown so far, and the other three would beat all bar a couple.

I appreciate that they only had the FA cup that season, but it's virtually the same goal as the one that won it the season before, but from the other side. Was Brian Barwick the Editor back then?

there york vs Stevenage game in the fourth division produced one goal that would have won goal of the season most years, a thirty yard, top corner screamer, but the first goal involved a player juggling the ball a couple of times before smacking a dipping volley against the bar from the edge of the box, with some guy heading in the rebound. a moment of skill like that, combined with the inevitable substance abuse problem would have been enough to give that player Maverick status back in the 70's or 80's. Some guy in the northampton dagenham game nearly pulled off a flying backheel volley, and missed by inches.

I think that it's only reasonable to conclude that the standard of technical ability has risen so vastly in the last 30 years that even players in the fourth division are regularly pulling off things that international players wouldn't have dreamed of in the 1980's.

ITV had a Goal of the Season competition in each of their years with the league contract.

1989-90 winner - Robert Rosario in a 4-4 between Norwich and Southampton.

1990-91 winner - Roy Wegerle for QPR at Leeds.

And I've got a feeling this Anders Limpar goal was the 1991-92 winner.

that wegerle finish is nothing special, but the way he beats the four tackles is pretty sweet. he even threw in a stepover.

Last summer was the time for Hull to give bruce the boot. He has the skillset to get a team so far, but his crippling limitations then start to get in the way, and it can all spiral out of control very quickly. THey're taking a bit of a beating at west Ham, and are plummeting like a stone

Is it really true that one Scunthorpe keeper broke his arm minutes into the game, then the replacement broke his in the same half?

I see OTF favourite, Mr S F Downing, got another.

That Spurs offside was described on Sky this morning as the sort of decision given in a Sunday League match when the opposition manager is running the line.

That said, the fall for the penalty was of the kind that if you were in a busy city centre and you were in a rush, you could expertly manoeuvre your physicality to avoid the person who suddenly sprang up in front of you. Then again, it's the PL, money and prestige is involved, and it's in the penalty box, so....(player goes down as if hit in the back with imaginary scimitar)

That's true, Mumpo. Today's Premier League players encompass many aspects of the modern athlete: the vision, the physical prowess, the quicksilver reaction to any given situation, but, more than all of these virtues, the correct physical and mental recreation of being clocked in the back by a heavy, brutal piece of historical weaponry.

Just found out that for all the billions City have invested in the team, the facilities and East Central Manchester (there are now 4 leisure centres for every one child in Beswick) the beer they sell to their fans is Foster's. That's the contempt the Sheikh holds the great unwashed in. Foster's. Unreal.
