Sir Jack was a lad eh?

A 2003 FT interview with the recently deceased ex Wolves owner Sir Jack Hayward:

"but I’m anti-French,” explains the former RAF pilot who says he “loved the war” and describes getting his “wings” as “the best day” of his life. “I’m also anti-German. Anti-all-Europeans actually."...

"Oh yes – if I had my way I’d form my own party far more right wing than Margaret Thatcher.” I laugh, thinking he is joking. But he isn’t. “I’d bring back National Service, the Scaffold, the Cat o’ Nine Tails, the Empire – places like Sierra Leone and Nigeria were so much better off under British rule than they are now.”...

"Now, suddenly, he finds himself with a team full of foreign signings – he struggles, comically, to pronounce their names, calling Okoronkwo from Nigeria “Orinoco”, and another player “Wappawappa”.

Was Jack Hayward the Wing Commander?

'Lad' in the Irish slang sense, possibly.

Feudal system? Bollocks to that modern namby-pamby stuff. What today's game needs is for all its pros to be lined up in a field and then ten out of every hundred executed as an example to the others. An example of what, I'm not sure, but it worked for the Romans in helping to keep discipline in the ranks for several hundred years. [In case Ken Bates somehow happens to come across this thread, I'm kidding.]

I still remember him for his "golden tit" outburst.

In this age of foreign oligarchs, I read articles like that about real football men like jack hayward and I get all nostalgic for the great chairmen of the past, and I can't help feeling sadness that there is no room any more for real characters like dave Whelan, simon corney, ken bates and robert Maxwell.

"The Cat o'Nine Tails?" Just how fucking old was Jack Hayward? They stopped using that in the navy in about 1870.

Still, he's dead, so that's good.

Surprised to hear he was a fan of Lily the Pink, what with her do-gooding medicinal compound.

And I'm leaving well alone any comments about him getting his 'wings' in France.

Also worth adding the family tradition of tax dodging, and the fact that his estate is being sued by his children and grandchildren.

I think he got one of the first TB jabs, Rogin.

Good basis for a new Viz character:

Sir Jack Hayward - his opinions are wayward.

You could probably add Bob Lord to that list.My Father in law knew Jack Walker fairly well.Said he held views that would make Dave Whelan look like a Socialist Worker seller outside the student union.

'Union Jack' Hayward did have a tangential role in the Jeremy Thorpe/Rinkagate scandal so should at least be acknowledged for contributing to the jollity of national life in that respect. Clearly his political judgement grew even sharper with age.

As Stumpy said, the 'golden tit' episode was almost worth sitting through the years of 'promised land' nonsense for.

That was his distant cousin Nantie, sometime South African and Irish international cricketer.

If only he'd realised what those wooden things at either end of the pitch were for...
