Atlanta are absolutely schooling Charlotte at half time. Charlotte look awful.

Charlotte were abject in St Louis, so this is not a huge surprise

          Using the orange ball.
The snow is disappearing so its creates an uneven, Pollock-esque pattern.

The Loons are wearing the Aurora Borealis shirts, which look like those paper cups that were common in the 80s.

Very, very similar in my experience, but hard to pick up for those with no prior exposure to the sport

Atlanta beat an abject Charlotte in North Carolina, while both Inter Miami and Seattle surrendered their 100% records at New York City and Cincinnati, respectively. St Louis continued their excellent start to the season with another win away, this time at a Portland team that look lost, while Nashville look really strong this year, beating Montreal 2-0 at home. However (and though I hate to say it), LAFC were absolutely rampant yesterday against the previously unbeaten New England, winning 4-0 with little in the way of opposition from what is obviously a good side. They travel to Seattle next and we'll really see what they're made of.

In the USL Championship, Loudoun United (now mostly free of DC United stink) got off to a great start, winning 3-1 at Memphis, while champions San Antonio brushed aside Oakland Roots in front of a capacity 8,000 crowd. They play each other next week. Louisville also won big away at Orange County and the tie of the round turned out to be Monterey Bay versus Hartford, finishing 5-3 to the home side.

USL League One kicks off on Friday.

went to bed at half time, only 1-0 then. Without Carlos Gil, the Revs don't get out of 1st gear. BTW - Bruce Arena could do with dropping a few pounds. Seriously. Now a comment on the commentary.

I know Brian Dunseth - as he was a very young player who joined the Revs when our fanzine was at its height. And we interviewed him a couple of times and he was always good for 'inside info' from the dressing room We made fun of him as well. Overall, he was a good egg, albeit a Man Utd supporting good egg. But the commentary with him and his buddy Max Bretos was so annoying. They barely commentated on the match and spent the 45 mins talking about tactics or even, other teams draft picks. They did not stop talking. At all. Jesus. I pine for the days when we had Derek Rae commentating for the Revs with his annoying accuracy for name pronunciation in the native tongue...

Buried in a sports business article about the USL extending their contract with a marketing agency is that DCU got $40M for Loudoun United and USL expects half of the championship to break even by 2024. Also, it's $20M for a USL Championship expansion team and $5M for League One.

Monterey Bay hit 2 posts as well as racking up 5 goals. Hartford has gorgeous road unis and no defense.

Chicago are loaning in a U-22 left back from Pachuca with buy option.

The final report came out today on the Gregg Berhalter investigation and the Reynas appear to be the worst sports parents around by a wide margin.

Men in Blazers had a good summary of the Reyna situation. The Reyna’s look terrible. Berhalter doesn’t look great, because he aired the issue in public and because he pushed and kicked his now-wife 30 years ago, but his claim that the Reynas were blackmailing him has some support in the texts uncovered in the investigation. So, if nothing else, he's been honest.

Claudio Reyna didn't participate in the investigation but he shows himself to be a prick dating long before the world cup. For example, he texted McBride or Stewart - I forget which - to complain that one of the US U17 games had a female ref. Danielle Reyna did talk to the investigators twice but apparently her statements were not consistent, either with each other or with the version of events portrayed in the uncovered texts.

US Soccer has to cover its ass legally and say he’s still a candidate for the job, but he really can’t be. For one, even in countries with somewhat more functional FAs*, coaches rarely succeed in a second WC cycle and the US didn't exactly light it up in the last one. So even if none of this had happened, I'd hope the US would be shopping for new leadership.

Also, if he stayed on as coach, and doesn’t pick Claudio Reyna, that will be a circus. But if he does pick him, I don’t see how they can work together.

Also, Roger Bennett pointed out that none of the rest of the US national team's young players likely to be in the 2026 mix have spoken out in favor of Berhalter. Perhaps because they think there's no chance of him coming back anyway and don't want to start the relationship with a new coach on the wrong foot.

But I think to overcome all of this bad mojo, he needs strong support of Pulisic et al and I don't think he has that. I don't know if that means they don't like him or think he's a bad coach, just that they and/or their agents would probably prefer the program go in a new direction.

                      Edit: I added more info.

                      * Are there any highly functional FAs? France, which has won a few World Cups, seems to be a shitshow right now. The English FA, which I assume is the richest federation, gets in it's own way as often as not and even Germany fucks it up sometimes.

USL League One, one of three divisions regarded as official third tiers of US football, kicks off this weekend. Kind of. It's a twelve-team league but only half the teams play this weekend, with five matches next weekend. It'll be late April before all the teams play on the same weekend. Weird.

Anyway, the pick of the opening week's games is the visit of Richmond Kickers to Charlotte Independence. Richmond topped the regular table last season and are celebrating their thirtieth anniversary this year, while Charlotte made the play-offs last time out and were founded nine years ago, having taken over the pro-license of former A-League side Charlotte Eagles.

The other games see champions South Georgia Tormenta (from Statesboro, 200 miles southeast of Atlanta) travel to North Carolina FC in Cary, North Carolina, just outside the Raleigh city limits on Friday, and expansion side One Knoxville SC host Lexington on Saturday.

All the games are live on YouTube, if you fancy some football roughly at the equivalent level to the National League (at a stretch).

Edit: for those who love a good name, English midfielder Nortei Nortey plays for North Colorado Hailstorm, alongside former Hearts player Billy King.

Austin got bounced out of Champions League by a Haitian team that hadn't played a league match in about 490 days, 3-2 on aggregate.

Due to winning CCL last year, Seattle gets to go to the expanded Club World Cup in 2025.

This week’s obvious standout MLS tie is Seattle at home to LAFC, a real test of both teams’ ambitions to top the Western Conference. LA were rampant last week against New England, while Seattle slipped up in Cincinnati so it should be a cracker. It’s free on Apple TV (Fox in the US) so you could do worse than spend your Saturday night watching this “8.30pm” kickoff. New England take on Nashville in the other marquee match, but that’s behind the paywall at MLS Season Pass.

The other free matches are Miami’s visit to Toronto (11.30pm), Dallas vs Kansas City (0.30am), a Texas derby between Houston and Austin (also 0.30am), Colorado vs Minnesota (1.30am), and LA Galaxy vs Vancouver (2.30am).

In the USL Championship, Colorado Springs won away at El Paso on Wednesday, and the weekend’s fixtures throw up some interesting clashes, with Sacramento vs Charleston, Loudoun vs San Antonio, and Oakland’s visit to Edinburg to play Rio Grande Valley Toros.

                                Josh Lambo finally retired, today.

Janine Beckie did her ACL, out for the year for Portland Thorns.

Bayern Munich have abandoned their partnership w/FCD for one with LAFC.

Louisville City are getting $1.5M with a bunch of attainable add ons for their wunderkid Josh Wynter. He just can't officially sign til he's 18.

A bunch of Chinese investors applied for a NISA expansion team next year, Irvine Zeta FC, to groundshare with OCFC in Irvine.

Indy Eleven bought Douglas Martinez from Sacramento Republic. Indy loaded up on USL stars, mostly from Western teams, this offseason and season: Aodhan Quinn, Sebastian Guenzatti, Solomon Asante, and now Martinez.

All Star Game is vs Arsenal.

Lewis O'Brien signs for DCU on loan from Nottingham Forest, and Carl Robinson is now an assistant to Rooney. Greaaaaaat.

Bill Hamid signed for Memphis 901.

Jack Price tore his Achilles against Minnesota this weekend, out for the season for Colorado.

Nations League semis and final will be in Vegas at the Raiders stadium in mid-June.

In MLS this week, St Louis kept up their 100% record (the only one left) by beating San Jose 3-0 in impressive fashion and proudly sit atop the Western Conference. The big game between Seattle and LAFC fizzled out into a 0-0 draw.

Elsewhere, Cincinnati came from 2 goals down to draw at Chicago, Toronto got a useful win over Inter Miami (for whom Harvey Neville had a decent game), and Atlanta absolutely demolished Portland 5-1 to top in the East.

Down in the USL Championship, Colorado Springs followed up their away win at El Paso on Thursday with a 1-1 draw at home to Hartford. El Paso lost at home again, this time to Detroit, while the game of the week was probably over at Loudoun United, who drew 1-1 with champions San Antonio but had a man sent off for pushing the referee - after the referee had pushed him first! Louisville are the early leaders in the East, with San Diego also on 6 points in the West.

Just 3 games in the third tier USL League One, but One Knoxville versus Lexington saw the home side play their first League One game and the away team their first game EVER. It ended 2-1 to Knoxville. Reigning champions Tormenta won away at North Carolina.

The third tier reserve league MLS next Pro kicks off this weekend, with the other third tier NISA league starting the week after.

The first round proper of the US Open Cup - their FA Cup, basically - is going on this week, with all but 3 matches settled. Mostly it's been fourth-tier USL League Two and NPSL sides making it through to the second round (where the third and some second tier sides enter) but there was a shock of sorts in Las Cruces last night as UDA Soccer beat USL League Two Park City (from Utah). UDA stands for University Degrees Abroad and its academy acts as the de facto soccer program for New Mexico State University, tied into three academies in the UK. The only other "non-league" side through so far are Chicago House (on hiatus from the NISA in the Midwest Soccer league), who beat Bavarian United from Wisconsin. The remaining 3 matches are tonight, with two qualifiers in action, and the second round kicks off in 2 weeks' time.

Manhattan SC, which grew out of a recreational/kids organisation in our neighbourhood, won their first ever match in the Cup against FC Motown (of Morristown, New Jersey) in extra time.

The match was at the College of Mount Saint Vincent's extremely photogenic ground in Riverdale

The final 4 games in the US Open Cup first round brought 2 more "upsets" as qualifiers Landsdowne Yonkers and Capo FC made it through to the second round. From New York and playing in the Eastern Premier Soccer League, Yonkers made the third round in 2016 and have a relationship with Celtic. Capo, from San Juan Capistrano in California, will be in USL League Two when it opens in May.

MLS this week throws up some interetsing matches that wouldn't have been noteworthy at all a few weeks ago. Columbus host Atlanta United on Saturday night, with Nashville at home to Cincinnati, and all four are in surprisingly good form, although Nashville were decent last year. The Nashville game is free on Apple TV, kick off at 11.30pm. The other free games are Portland vs LA Galaxy (8.30pm), Philadelphia vs Orlando (11.30pm), DC United vs New England (11.30pm), Inter Miami vs Chicago (11.30pm), and Real Salt Lake vs St Louis (0.30am), the latter hoping to make it five wins out of five. Highlights of all games will be on YouTube a few hours later.

The USL Championship has two standout fixtures. Champions San Antonio vs Colorado Springs with both sides unbeaten thus far, and early pacesetters San Diego visit last year's Open Cup heroes Sacramento in a Californian derby (although "local" is a stretch at 500 miles). All the matches are streamed live on YouTube, with highlights following switfly afterwards.

In USL League Two, Greenville Triumph vs Richmond Kickers is the plum tie of the second round of matches, and again all matches are streamed live on YouTube.

Oh, and the USMNT is away at Grenada tonight, if you care about that sort of thing. Canada visit Curacao tomorrow.

Lansdowne Yonkers only just rebranded from Lansdowne Bhoys and are trying to broaden their appeal being the Celtic minded, without losing their base

They continue to play in green and white hoops.

Yonkers, a once thriving industrial city on the Hudson just north of the Bronx, is undergoing a bit of a revival after a solid half century of decline.

NWSL started today. For Gotham, Ali Krieger is retiring after this season, while Sinead Farrelly tried out this preseason and ended up signing a 1 year seal.

Shea Groom tore her MCL, out 6-8 weeks.

The Cubs owners are looking into buying the Chicago Red Stars.

Oakland Roots v Memphis tonight is postponed because the host college stadium the Roots use hasn't actually finished renovations.

Well, when I pegged Columbus vs Atlanta as a match of the week candidate I wasn't expecting seven goals, especially not with six of them going to the home side, but this was an international weekend and there were some weird results (and a Philadelphia side only able to name 16 players due to call-ups and injuries). In the East, New England lead the way after a 2-1 win away at DC United, with Cincinnati getting the better of Nashville to keep up a good run of form. St Louis made it FIVE out of FIVE on the road in Utah, scoring four with no reply, which Seattle matched at Kansas City, all four goals going to Jordan "why isn't he in the USMNT?" Morris. LAFC ground out another victory at home to Dallas.

In the USL Championship, El Paso finally got a win, away at Louisville after three straight defeats at home. Birmingham lead the Eastern Conference after three rounds, winning 1-0 away at Hartford, with the twin powerhouses of San Antonio - 1-0 at home over Colorado Springs - and Sacramento (who beat San Diego 1-0) making the early running in the west. New Mexico are the only team left with a 100% record, having played one and won one so far.

USL League One gave us a few more matches than last week and a shock in reigning champions Tormenta losing at home - and losing their heads - 3-1 to Charlotte. Richmond picked up a win on the road at Greenville, who played on an artifical turf covered in gridiron markings to such an extent that it made me feel a bit sick watching it.

The US men's national team won 7-1 away at Grenada with no US-based players seeing action, while Canada beat Curacao 2-0 with the Toronto trio of Osorio, Laryea, and Kaye all playing (Toronto drew 0-0 at San Jose in their absence).
