    (c) I mean obviously the incident you report is fucking appalling, but I'm not sure how something that happened 22 years ago should preclude them from doing the right thing today.
Yeah, sorry Vini, we can't back you up on this because some nasty shit happened here when you were still in nappies

The public prosecutors in Valencia have opened a hate crime investigation.

And Rubiales (the Federation president) has decided that this is something he can clobber Tebas (league president) with in their never ending Punch and Judy Act

                Some more background

La Liga said it had “requested all available images in order to investigate what took place” and that it would “take the appropriate legal action if any hate crime is identified”. Since October 2021, it has done so already nine times in cases involving Vinicius Jr at La Liga matches. Of these, only two cases have led to punishments such as fines or stadium bans for individual fans. Four cases remain open.

One of the three cases to have been closed without charges being brought relates to an away match against Atletico Madrid in September last year when fans were recorded chanting: “Vinicius, you are a monkey”. Prosecutors said that because the chanting had lasted “just a few seconds” and took place within the context of “a football game with maximum rivalry”, it was therefore “not a crime against the dignity of the person affected”.

Off the pitch, Vinicius Jr was compared to a monkey on mainstream Spanish TV show El Chiringuito de Jugones, whose host later apologised. In January, an effigy of the player was hung from a motorway bridge close to Real Madrid’s training ground before a match with city rivals Atletico.

In the Spanish media, he is often portrayed in a negative light; as tempestuous, unruly or disrespectful. Often, more airtime is given to this than the racist abuse he receives. This was a feature of some of Sunday night’s post-match reaction, too.

And still is on Wednesday, with local papers "shocked" that his red card has been rescinded. The same papers who are similarily disgusted that Mestalla has been partially closed for five matches. But I've been unpleasantly surprised by a lot of local reaction in the bars as well, claiming that it was only a handful of people chanting (untrue), that it was normal football banter, that Vinicius somehow warranted what he got, that Madrid fans themselves have done worse. There was an unbelievably ridiculos distraction headline in the local sports paper yesterday complaining about how VAR decisions have affected Valencia more than other clubs, along with desperate claims that Mestalla is not racist. In fact, that paper's headline today says "¡Verguenza!" - shameful; but referring to the overturning of the red card and the partial ground closure, not the racist taunts.

(Of course, not everyone or probably most of those who went to the match is racist.)

One big problem is the everyday acceptance of words such as negrito, maricón, etc. which become almost normalised as a lazy way of speaking and which is very rarely challenged. .

                          As in 'Yes, all men'.

Analogous to women's fear of men. I would imagine that many black players in Spain think all Spanish are racist. Of course they aren't but until the player knows otherwise...

It's very weird to see an entire league having "it's only a beloved childhood doll, which is why we've built a shrine to it in our pub, and surrounded it with union jacks and included a specially commissioned wedding portrait of Prince phillip and Winston churchil" moment.

it's also a refreshing throw back to the days before commercialism, as it doesn't seem to matter at all that vinicius Jr is the outstanding player in the league and is steadily building the sort of personal following you typically get nowadays if you consistently do things that seem inseparable from magic.

They're not ready to cast aside cherished traditions just to appease the global television audience they so desperately crave.

I just don't know how it all fits in with florentino's plans to construct an entire team of outfield players who are a living tribute to the history of voluntary and decidedly involuntary migration from West africa. I was very interested to see how that would play out

Probably some punishment coming for Steven Berghuis who's ended up on cameraphone braying some dickhead Twente fan who racially abused Brian Brobbey.

So France beat Spain 3 1 in the semi finals of the u 17 European championship, leading to this appearing in AS covering the match. (Caution Google translate). This is pretty wild stuff.

Btw, spain's best player, and scorer of their goal, is the outrageously gifted 15 year old lamine yamal,, one parent from guinea Bissau, one parent from Morocco.

He scored an absolute screamer to put spain ahead, but spain messed up the marking at a corner, france went ahead with as soft footed a finish as you could hope for, and then spain messed up marking an instance of France cutting the ball back from the endline. Goals from 4.10

Basically, it's claiming that immigrants are literally outmuscling their opponents, rather than progressing due to superior skills:

Ah balls. It's one of those photo attachment mess ups. I can see it. Basically it's AS saying france won by picking a bunch of big physical Africans at the expense of technique. You can fill in the rest.

Geopolitics have changed football in France forever. The African roots of the vast majority of its players have meant that in the last two decades the blue team has become the most physical team on the continent, a quality that has undoubtedly helped it reach four World Cup finals in recent years. 25 years. A superiority that is even more noticeable in the lower categories. When the technique does not give him, the tactical order and the muscle are enough to counteract the talent of his rivals. France was worse than England in the quarterfinals and also proposed less than Spain in the semifinals, but they will be the ones who will play the European final thanks to their forcefulness in the areas.
